As we picked the Americans to win the tournament in our 2021 Ryder Cup preview – we are also predicting an American to end the tournament as the top points scorer. Of the 12 players, the guy we are most confident will lead the event in scoring is Justin Thomas.

Justin Thomas was pretty much the lone bright spot on the 2018 American team. Thomas put up four points for the Americans in 2018. The four points are the most by an American player since Corey Pavin had four at the 1995 Ryder Cup.

Thomas’ teammate from 2018 – Jordan Spieth – is on the team in 2021. The two picked up three wins when paired together. It makes sense they pair again in 2021. That means Thomas just needs a win on Sunday for four points (which should lead or tie for the lead in points).

Thomas should be the golf betting odds favourite against anyone on the European team – except for Jon Rahm. Viktor Hovland could give him some trouble, but overall Thomas is in a good position to pick up four points at the 2021 Ryder Cup.

Race to Ten Points

Race to Ten PointsBovadaBovadaBovadaRace to Ten Points
USA-165+1400 (Tie)+140Europe

Although we believe the American team is more talented, there is something about Europe’s team play that makes it worth tempting to bet they will hit ten points first. Europe’s players – even when lower-ranked and less talented – feed off each other well.

We watched it in 2018. Tommy Fleetwood and his partner Francesco Molinari won four matches. Of course, they needed those sweeps to get to ten points first at the 2018 Ryder Cup. If they lost just one of those matches, the score would have been 9.5 to 9.5 after the first three singles matches.

They have Fleetwood back this year – however, it is unlikely he and his next partner sweep the Americans. That means it is likely 7.5 to 8.5 or 7-9 for the Europeans going into Sunday. However, Sunday is when the Americans make some noise to surpass the Europeans.

Of course, in this scenario the chance of both teams reaching ten points at the same time is reasonable. If the US is down 7.5 and starts with two wins and a halved means both sides reach ten points at the same time. It is a bit risky but it is bound to happen once at the Ryder Cup.

Total Points – Bryson DeChambeau

Over 2.5 Points+150-2002.5 Pts or Under

DeChambeau was arguably the worst player on the 2018 American Ryder Cup team. He failed to pick up a point – despite two head-to-heads against Alexander Noren (who still does not have a win on the PGA Tour).

DeChambeau is a better golfer now compared to three years ago. The issue is he is also a bit erratic. He can put together some bad stretches if he gets flustered. That could mean he only plays in three (or at most four matches). Three means he needs a clean sweep for the over. Four means he would have to pair well with two partners and win his singles match.

Too hard to predict his team dynamic at the tournament. Bet on him to finish with 2.5 points or under at the 2021 Ryder Cup.

Did you know that Sergio Garcia holds the record for most points in Ryder Cup history with 25.5? The 41-year-old Spaniard has played in the tournament every year since 1999. Over that stretch, he is 22-12-7 (one point per win, 0.5 points per tie) to accrue the record.

How many times in nine Ryder Cup appearances has Sergio Garcia scored at least 2.5 points? Six times – including three points in 2018. There is betting value on taking him to get over 2.5 points again in 2021.

Collin Morikawa – To Score Five Points

Win 5 PointsBovada
Collin Morikawa+10000

Five points in the Ryder Cup is exceedingly rare. Only four players (in the five-match era) have capped the tournament with five points. Three Americans have accomplished the feat – but none since Larry Nelson in 1979. At the 2018 Ryder Cup, Francesco Molinari became the first European player to finish the Ryder Cup with five points.

Of the 24 guys in the event this year, Collin Morikawa is our bet to end the 2021 Ryder Cup 5-0-0. Morikawa’s personality and playing style will pair well with any American teammate. He is also one of the best young golfers in the world – winning Two Majors in the last 15 months.

Jon Rahm – To Score Zero Points

Jon Rahm+4000

Of the two dozen golfers at the Ryder Cup, Jon Rahm is the biggest longshot to get shut out at the event. That is why we are betting he will fail to score in 2021. It can happen to anyone. Danny Willet – after winning his first (and only Major) failed to win a point in 2016.

At the 2018 Ryder Cup, three American players failed to win a point – Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, and Tiger Woods. Most of these players are not at the level of a prime 2021 Jon Rahm. However, if he plays a bad round on Friday and gets held off a second pairing on Saturday and loses on Sunday – that equals zero wins. It is worth sprinkling a bit on Rahm to score zero.
