The Phoenix Open is routinely the most fun golf event of the PGA season. It attracts not only the most amount of fans but also the rowdiest. Plus, the tourney is taking place the same weekend and in the same city as the NFL’s Super Bowl — which only adds to the excitement. All this makes the 2023 Phoenix Open a must-bet event in our eyes. Keep reading to get our preview of the tourney, plus free picks to win in Phoenix!
We’ll start with the Phoenix Open odds, however. On the cusp of the event starting, the following golfers have been pegged as the favorites to finish first by the top golf betting sites:
2023 Phoenix Open Preview
After a string of multi-course PGA events, the Phoenix Open is a return to one — TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course. This has been the same host of the tourney since 1987. Perhaps the course itself is the best place to start when previewing the 2023 Phoenix Open.
Penalties are the big thing to look out for in this course. Eight percent of missed fairways lead to a penalty here — which is the third-highest in the Tour (behind only Sea Island and TPC River Highlands). Even one penalty can seize a player’s momentum in its tracks so it’s something to be cognizant of.
A whopping $20 million is on the line at “The Greatest Show on Grass”, as this event is affectionally called by fans. That’s the highest prize pool in the Phoenix Open’s illustrious history. Below we cover which golfers we think have the best chance at taking a bite out of that purse.
Best Bets To Win 2023 Phoenix Open
There are 132 golfers apart of the Phoenix Open field. Given that staggering number, are you sure you just want to bet on one golfer to win? We hope not — it’s simply too risky with the competition being so heavy. Realistically, you want to pick at least three golfers to win the 2023 Phoenix Open. That’s what we’ve done with our choices below:
Jon Rahm
Rahm has wasted no time in 2023, winning two tourneys already — the Sentry Tournament of Champions and the American Express. The latter is really relevant because it took place on the desert courses of La Quinta, California — which is eerily similar to what awaits at the Phoenix Open. Given that, Rahm is the definition of must-bet material. He’s been near unstoppable for months now so the recent victories have been no fluke.
Collin Morikawa
The seventh-ranked golfer in the world comes into Arizona playing in tip-top shape. He’s played in two tournaments in 2023, finishing second and third in each. Not only does he have that hot streak, but his game is well-suited for the deserts of Phoenix. An excellent driver already, the added elevation of Scottsdale only makes Morikawa more deadly when driving. To us, he’s a no-brainer choice here.
Justin Thomas
The fans are really what makes the Phoenix Open special. If you’ve ever seen the movie Happy Gilmore, it’s that type of crowd — beer-loving and loud, especially on the 16th hole. If there’s a player on the tour we think can use that crowd to draw energy from, it’s Thomas. We saw it at the Ryder Cup and the President’s Cup, Thomas FEEDS off high-energy atmospheres. That could really play to his favor in Scottsdale, which is why we’re picking him as a sneaky favorite to come out on top.
