The Rocket Mortgage Classic is one of the newest events on the PGA Tour. The Detroit Golf Club first hosted the event in 2019. The course is a par 72 with a length of 7.294 yards and a purse of $7.5 million (up from $7.3 million in 2019). Nate Lashley won in 2019 with a -25, and Bryson DeChambeau was the champion in 2020 after shooting 23 under par. The 2021 rendition of the tournament runs from July 1 to 4.

Zalatoris is coming off top-ten finishes at the 2021 Masters, 2021 PGA Championship, and the 2020 US Open. He has shown that – despite his somewhat gangly body, he has the power and skills needed for success on the Tour in 2021.
The field at the Rocket Mortgage Classic could be advantageous as well for Zalatoris. Some golfers opt to skip the tournament or head to the United Kingdom to get some rounds in there before the Open Championship.
Bryson DeChambeau Could Repeat as Champion at the Rocket Mortgage
Bryson DeChambeau absolutely decimated the Detroit Golf Course last year – putting up a -23 for his sixth win on the PGA Tour. DeChambeau ‘s ability off the tee make him a serious contender at courses like the Detroit Golf Course.
His raw power is nearly unmatched on the Tour – and can really make a difference on the 7,294-yard course that is not considered as demanding as other stops. DeChambeau could also use a win – to deflect from the Brooks – Bryson saga that has dominated much of the golf headlines for the last few weeks.
We can see him winning again and making a statement that this is one course not designed to test modern golfers with his style of play.
Matthew Wolff – Runner Up in 2020 Could Move up to Leader in 2021
As great as Bryson played in 2020 at the Detroit Golf Course, you could argue Matthew Wolff was the best golfer there for the first three rounds of the tournament. Wolff scored a blistering 64 in the second and third round of the event – better than any round Bryson put together.
However, a 71 on Sunday cost Wolff a chance at winning – eventually settling for second place (and missing out on his second win on the Tour). Wolff also should be happy to return to this course after his recent string of disappointments (including disqualification from the 2021 Masters).
Longshots with a Chance

Max Homa
In the first going of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, Max Homa was rock steady over four rounds. He finished ten under par – good enough for a spot in the top-50. His 68 in the first round shows he can put up the type of scores you need to win this low-scoring PGA Tour event. While he may not be an ironclad bet to win the tournament, we can see him adding to his five top-ten finishes with a solid performance at the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Open.
Matthew Laird
We are taking a bit of a leap of faith here on Matthew Laird – but sometimes that is what you have to do when you are betting on golf. Laird picked up his fourth career PGA Tour victory in October – winning the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. Like the Rocket Mortgage, the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open a pretty low-scoring event. When Laird won it in 2020 – he beat Austin Cook and Matthew Wolff in a playoff after shooting -23.
These types of events – that could see a few absentees due to the Olympics and 2021 Open Championship – have more variability, which is why we can see a guy like Laird picking up the win in Michigan.
