The flagship event of the PGA Tour takes place this week at TPC Sawgrass when the best golfers in the world compete at the 2025 edition of The Players Championship. The event features the largest prize pool on the PGA Tour at $25 million with $4.5 million going to the winner. The runner-up at The Players Championship earns $2.725 million. Last year, Scottie Scheffler (-20) won The Players Championship, beating Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman, and Xander Schauffele by one stroke. Scheffler also won the 2023 version of The Players Championship.
The Players Championship was first held in 1974. Before last year, no player had won back-to-back titles. Scheffler is the betting favorite to win this year’s event and earn an unprecedented threepeat. Jack Nicklaus (1974, 1976, 1978) is the only player to win The Players Championship three times. Other two-time winners are Fred Couples, Steve Elkington, Hal Sutton, Davis Love III, and Tiger Woods.

Scottie Scheffler’s 2025 PGA Tour was delayed following a kitchen injury that resulted in surgery on his right hand. The 28-year-old played for the first time this season at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in early January. Since then, Scheffler has played in three additional tournaments, with his best finish coming at The Genesis Invitational, where he was tied for third. Scheffler is coming off an 11th-place finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard event.
Scheffler played in 19 PGA Tour events in 2024, making the cut for each event. He finished the year with seven wins and two second-place finishes. Scheffler finished the year with 16 top-10 finishes and over $29 million in prize money.
Scheffler ranks third in strokes gained (1.829), seventh in strokes gained: approach to green (0.960), and 30th in strokes gained: putting (0.488). He is the No. 1 ranked player in the world.
Rory McIlroy betting breakdown
The No. 2 player on the Official World Golf Rankings, Rory McIlroy won the 2019 version of The Players Championship.
