The last tournament before the FedEx Cup Playoffs – the 2021 Wyndham Open – tees off this Thursday with an interesting field of golfers competing for one last win during the 50 PGA Tour event “Super Season” that is about to conclude. Although not always the most extensive field of golfers (or at least biggest name golfers), the Wyndham Open is a shockingly important golf tournament. Why? It is the last chance for any golfer to qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Sedgefield Country Club a Signature Course for Favourite Webb Simpson
Excluding his first outing at the North Carolina golf course (and a rough go of it in 2016), Webb Simpson has played some of the best golf of his career at Sedgefield Country Club. Webb Simpson won the event in 2011 shooting -18. He has matched that score or shot better from 2017 to 2020 (with three -18s and a -21). In those four years, he finished second twice and third the other two appearances.

Louis Oosthuizen – Highest Ranked Golfer Without a Win this Year
Betting on Louis Oosthuizen is a bet on “who is the best golfer in the world this year without a win.” Oosthuizen ranks eighth on the FedEx Cup Standings and is the only golfer 500 or fewer points back from the leader (Collin Morikawa) without a win.
Oosthuizen has never played at the Wyndham Open – usually taking the week off already locked into a spot in the FedEx Cup Playoffs. He is locked into the top-30 again this year, but without a victory, he wants to end the regular season on a high note.
Oosthuizen is the top putter – in strokes gained putting – on the PGA Tour. He also ranks high in going for the green – hit green percentage (29.91, eighth on the Tour) and strokes gained: approach the green. If he plays the few par 5s well (where driving distance is less critical than approach accuracy on the second shot) and he putts like we have seen all year, he could win his first PGA Tour win since the 2010 Open Championship.

Tommy Fleetwood is going into the Wyndham Tournament, sitting in 136th place on the FedEx Cup standings. However, unlike the majority of the guys ahead of him, he has only played 17 events on the PGA Tour this season (only Adam Scott and Matt Wallace are ranked between 100 and 136 and played less than 20 events).

Last year, Fleetwood made his debut at Sedgefield and Wyndham Championship. He played an excellent first three rounds, going into the Sunday at nine under par. However, he sputtered on the Sunday, shooting a 74 to finish -5 for the tournament. The first three rounds were promising, though, especially the 64 in the second round.
Fleetwood’s biggest strength is strokes gained around the green. He ranks 17th on the Tour at .359 (in comparison, Webb Simpson is seventh at .419). It is an excellent golfing stat to have as a strength at a course that ranks just outside the top-10 shortest courses on the PGA Tour.
