2021 Woodbine Mile Picks

Saturday, September 18 is one of the biggest days of the Woodbine horse racing betting year. The most important race of the day is the $1,000,000 Woodbine Mile (G1). The race, one of the three flagship events of the Woodbine racing meet, is always one of the most important preps for the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1), and its winner is awarded a Win and You’re In berth there.

The 2021 Woodbine Mile drew a field of ten horses, an international group consisting of American, Canadian, and British competitors. The race, which is run at a mile over Woodbine’s broad, galloping E. P. Taylor turf course, is always an exciting one. Superstars like Wise Dan and Tepin have won the race throughout its history.

Who are the best competitors for the Woodbine Mile, and what are the best places to bet the race? This is the right place to find out!

Woodbine Mile Handicapping

There is not a lot of pace drawn into the 2021 edition of the Woodbine Mile. #1 Town Cruise made the early running in the King Edward (G2), the local prep for this race, and he will likely make the pace again. He was run down late in that outing, settling for second, and will have better horses chasing him. So, odds are unlikely that he will wire this. But, he may lead for a long time.

A few of his foes could get very nice trips in range. #3 March to the Arch fell a length and a quarter short after running into some traffic in the King Edward, but he also does not have to be as far back as he was that day. If Patrick Husbands gets him a little closer early and he can stay out of trouble, he has the consistency and the class to have a strong win chance.

Fillies do well in the Woodbine Mile, and #6 Change of Control hopes to add to that history. One of the top North American filly and mare sprinters, she is stakes-placed against males, and her strong win in the Intercontinental (G3) over seven furlongs at Belmont bodes well for her ability to handle the one-turn turf mile at Woodbine. Being a stretch-out sprinter with tactical speed in turf sprints, she should also be close to the pace early.

#8 Avie’s Flatter also has some tactical speed. Fourth after running into some traffic on the turn in the King Edward, he has some tables to turn on several foes in this. But, if he can sit closer to the pace than he did that day, perhaps getting a trip more like he got two back when he won the seven-furlong Connaught Cup (G2), he might be able to improve his result.

King Edward winner #2 Olympic Runner is likely to come from midpack, or perhaps a little further back. He is in strong form, a close second in the Connaught Cup before winning that local prep. Perennial leading rider Rafael Hernandez remains in the irons, and when Olympic Runner is in good form, he tends to stay in good form. Expect another run from him late.

Another one who should be coming from well off the pace is #10 Space Traveller. A European who has been relocated to North America for this year, he ran a surprisingly good fourth in the Mr. D (G1) last month, closing well to run fourth behind a wire-to-wire winner. The pace may be tough for him again, but he cuts back to a distance where he is already a G2 winner and his jockey Daniel Tudhope has already won a Woodbine Mile with Mondialiste.

#5 Set Piece brings class; he ran second in the Fourstardave (G1) last out and won the Wise Dan (G2) two back. He is a closer, but he has been able to close and win even without a torrid pace. But, he is not the most consistent horse at the break, and his better distance may be slightly longer than a mile.

#7 Raging Bull will be well bet, like all Chad Brown trainees tend to be, but be careful. Yes, he did run a troubled third in this race last year, so he has proven he can handle this course. But, he is a closer who far more often than not does not get all the way there. Especially with a slow to modest pace likely, Raging Bull could get outkicked at a short price.

Two others round out the field. #4 Ride a Comet and #9 Duke of Hazzard. Ride a Comet makes his first start since running third to Set Piece in the Wise Dan. He has some strong Woodbine turf form from earlier in his career, but will need to find one of his best races fresh off a three-month layoff. Duke of Hazzard, has been nabbing the odd share in G2 and G3 company in Great Britain, though these are tougher foes and he has not won a race since the Celebration Mile (G2) two years back.
