The Belmont Stakes is one of the most difficult races to handicap. Belmont Park is a unique track, with a demanding, sandy surface and a sweeping mile and a half dirt oval. Jockeys who ride the course regularly are at an advantage, as are trainers with a proven track record of getting horses fit for a mile and a half at Belmont.

Belmont Stakes Contenders

Essential Quality will almost certainly go off the favorite in the Belmont Stakes. Though he lost for the first time ever in the Kentucky Derby, he had a rough start that got him further off the early pace than he otherwise would have been. He rallied to be beaten only a length in a race where speed held well, which speaks well of his form.

Essential Quality is also by Tapit, a sire who already has three Belmont winners, from a female family replete with two-turn class. So, he has a good chance of being able to handle the Belmont trip.

Known Agenda has the best chance to upset Essential Quality. His connections shine: he is trained by Todd Pletcher, a three-time Belmont winner, and his jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. is Belmont’s current leading rider. Known Agenda had a rough start from the rail in the Kentucky Derby, relegating him near the rear, and should get a much better trip from the 6 gate here.

Known Agenda also has an excellent pedigree for the stretch out to the Belmont distance. He is by top-class stamina sire Curlin, who himself came very close in the Belmont. His female family has a lot of turf staying form in Europe, as well.

Rock Your World was knocked off of his usual frontrunning style when bumped early in the Kentucky Derby, but should be fast enough to clear off from his near-outside draw this time. Speed tends to play well in the Belmont stakes, and on big days at Belmont more generally; he will be the one to catch. And, there is some turf stamina on his dam’s side.

Rombauer and Hot Rod Charlie will take betting action, but both have major questions. Rombauer is in excellent form off his Preakness win, and was tactical in the Blue Grass, but has tables to turn on Essential Quality and his pedigree isn’t the best for the distance. Hot Rod Charlie also has pedigree questions, and trainer Doug O’Neill has a poor Belmont record.

Belmont Stakes Longshot

Among the longshots, give a serious look to Overtook. He also comes out for Todd Pletcher, a well-proven Belmont trainer with both chalks and longshots. He comes second off the lay, handled Belmont well enough in the Peter Pan, and has strong pedigree on both sides to suggest he will handle a mile and a half better than most.
