Horses who ran in the Kentucky Derby have tried it once; horses who didn’t run at Churchill are trying a new challenge. That makes the Belmont Stakes a tough and potentially very lucrative betting race.
These are the leading contenders among the 2025 Belmont Stakes field.
Belmont Stakes Best Bet
The best bet in the Belmont Stakes is Baeza. He was a little later to the graded-stakes ranks than most of his foes, but he is taking it in stride and continuing to show up. He needed to draw into the Kentucky Derby off the also-eligible list, but despite the parking-lot post and some trouble in traffic, he was able to make a monster late run and almost catch Journalism for second.

Now, he has that experience underneath him. He keeps leading big-race rider Flavien Prat in the irons. He proved in the Kentucky Derby that he can handle a wet track if Saratoga comes up that way, which it might. And, he has some tactical versatility from a nice starting gate. All in all, he has the most upside in what many think is a two-horse race between two horses other than him.
Belmont Stakes Contenders
The top two betting choices in the field, Sovereignty and Journalism, both have legitimate claims to the Belmont Stakes. They are both consistent horses who have no problem with Classic distances, and both handled the Kentucky Derby well enough to make the possibility of rain on Belmont day no problem at all.

Between the two, Sovereignty is preferred. He has had two extra weeks of rest into the Belmont, compared to Journalism. Though he may not get as much pace to close into as he did at Churchill Downs, the presence of both Rodriguez and Crudo means it should be sharp. And, he can move earlier than a true deep closer, much like he did in the Derby.
Journalism, of course, always shows up. He probably gets the jump on Sovereignty – though, he did in the Kentucky Derby as well and ended up second best. With that, however, he just keeps running good race after good race, and is fast and consistent enough that even if he regresses just a little bit off that huge Preakness, the odds are that he hits the board.
Belmont Stakes Longshot
Among the long shots in the Belmont, the one with the most upside is Crudo. He and Rodriguez both look like one-way speed based on what they’ve done so far. Between the two, Crudo is the better drawn, outside of Rodriguez.

Also, while Rodriguez has had several chances to prove what he can do without the early lead and has disappointed, Crudo’s only race without the lead was a debut in which he had a poor start. This means he may be fast enough to make the running…or, with a bit of experience, he could prove he has some tactical speed after all for Todd Pletcher, a trainer who always turns up big in the Belmont.
