Now that you have made your betting accounts, let’s get to know the best horses in the 2021 Breeders’ Cup Turf.
Breeders’ Cup Turf Favorites
#13 Tarnawa is the defending champion. Though she does not have a win streak into this race like last year, she has been facing better company and holding her own: a close second in the Irish Champion (G1), and then a close second in the Arc de Triomphe (G1), the best mile and a half turf race in the world.
Tarnawa is a closer, The question is whether she gets enough pace in front of her, as she is a closer. But, the scratches of United and Domestic Spending mean #15 Bolshoi Ballet and #16 Channel Maker get into the race — Channel Maker almost always shows speed, and Bolshoi Ballet tends to be on or near the lead as well. so, these scratches help Tarnawa.
Breeders’ Cup Turf Value Horses
The most interesting horse to bet in the Breeders’ Cup Turf is #7 Walton Street. Though this is a serious step up in class from the Canadian International (G1) last out, in previous starts he was holding his own against top horses. Three back he ran fourth in the Sheema Classic (G1), and then two starts back he was only a length behind Torquator Tasso, who then won the Arc.
With tactical speed, he should be able to sit in range and get the jump on the real closers in the race. That should give him a great trip over this firm ground for trainer Charles Appleby, who is one of the best in the world at shipping horses globally.
#12 Teona is another who should be a square price in this field, and has legitimate claims. She was well beaten in the Oaks (G1) three back over soft going, but has won her next two over better ground, including the Prix Vermeille (G1) against older at Longchamp September 12. She should like the ground at Del Mar and is more tactical than many others in this field.
Breeders’ Cup Turf Exotics Horses
#11 Gufo benefits from the extra speed drawn into the race with the scratches. Though he has tables to turn on Rockemperor from last out, he should appreciate the pace setup this time, and he is well proven both at the mile and a half and over firm turf. If he runs back to his Sword Dancer (G1), he should be right in the running at the end.
German Derby winner #9 Sisfahan is another who, like Walton Street and Tarnawa, has form through Arc winner Torquator Tasso. Two starts ago, in the Grosser Preis von Baden (G1), he crossed the wire just a length behind that foe. He was third next out in the Preis von Europa, and he will have to bounce back from that. But, if he does, he’ll be rolling late at a price.
