Cheltenham Gold Cup Top Contenders
Haiti Couleurs is the best bet in the 2026 Cheltenham Gold Cup. He comes in off of two straight victories over fences, and based on earlier form, the Gold Cup distance should be right up his alley – he is better proven over these staying distances than runners shorter in the market. The good to soft ground expected on Gold Cup day should be just fine, he has won nine of his last twelve, and he looks primed for another quality effort.
Willie Mullins always shows up live, and Gaelic Warrior is well positioned for him. He was a credible second in the Irish Gold Cup (G1) last out, a quality prep race for the Cheltenham Gold Cup. That was over soft ground, but he has good form over better ground, and has won going as long as three miles and one furlong. The step up for this should be no trouble for this consistent, classy runner.
The Jukebox Man hasn’t raced since a thrilling score in the King George VI (G1) on Boxing Day – Gaelic Warrior was a photo-finish third in that race, meaning he fits cozily classwise. He hasn’t raced since then, though has been able to win off of similarly long layoffs before. If he can stretch out to this trip, he should be a factor late.
Exotics Candidates for the Cheltenham Gold Cup
Firefox will be one of the longer shots in the field, but as the fourth-place finisher from the Irish Gold Cup, he has a decent last race from which to improve. That was his first race anywhere near the Cheltenham Gold Cup distance, but if he takes to it and gained some fitness out of that effort, he will be well suited to find the frame at a massive price.
Although Envoi Allen is getting on in years – he’s 12 – trainer Henry de Bromhead knows how to get a horse to peak at Cheltenham and he could be in good enough form to invade the lower rungs of exotics. He has been racing only sporadically, but can come back fresh to run well, and his last race was a solid score in the Champion Chase (G1) at Down Royal in November. With a light impost, he can find enough to get in the frame.
