Coming up on Saturday, July 23, 2022, the $1 million Haskell Invitational (G1) is one of the premier races for three-year-old horses all year long. Covering a mile and an eighth on the dirt at Monmouth Park, the race drew a field of eight sophomores, including four horses who have already won at the Grade 1 level. In addition to a rich purse, the winner also earns an automatic spot in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1).
Some of the best horses in history have won the Haskell. Its winners’ list includes Hall of Fame horses like American Pharoah, Rachel Alexandra, Point Given, and Holy Bull. Which horse will add their name to this excellent list on Saturday afternoon? Read on to find out!

Haskell Invitational Favorites
Four horses are already Grade 1 winners coming into the Haskell Stakes. Taiba is the morning line favorite, and he has a lot going for him. Though inexperience hurt him in the Kentucky Derby, he now has that behind him. He has tactical speed, and is already a two-turn Grade 1 winner. His trainer Bob Baffert has won more Haskells than anyone, and no jockey has won more than his rider Mike Smith.
Though Jack Christopher has won all of his starts impressively, it pays to be skeptical with him. All four of his races have come at one turn, and everything about his pedigree suggests that one turn is what will suit him. The last furlong of the Haskell may tax him beyond what he is bred to cover, and at a short price, that makes him one to play against.
Both Cyberknife and White Abarrio are nine-furlong G1 winners who were well beaten in the Derby, but bounced back with good efforts since then. White Abarrio is slightly preferred between those two, with a cleaner post and tougher competition last out. Cyberknife has yet to have to deal with a rail post, though if it turns out he can handle it, the rail is winning often enough to be a good post.
Longer Shots in the Haskell Invitational
Howling Time battled Cyberknife within a nose last out in the Matt Winn, just missing the bob. With a strong distance pedigree, tactical speed, and that good last-out effort, he is the most interesting of the horses who will be longer prices. He still has to prove that he can run his race away from Churchill Downs, but at the likely price it is a bet worth taking in exotics.
Benevengo cedes experience to many of his foes, with only four starts under him, and his only loss coming in a stakes. However, that loss was also his only start over an off track. With fast dirt likely for the Haskell and a confident allowance win on June 24, he is the most likely of the truly new faces to find the exotics in the Haskell.
