Trainer Chad Brown, as so often happens in top turf races in North America, has several entrants: three, to be exact. Etoile, probably his second-stringer, is the defending champion. She was narrowly defeated in the Dance Smartly (G2), the course and distance prep. However, Etoile benefits from as much speed as possible, and there may not be much more in this than she had in the Dance Smartly. She also tends to come up flat-footed over wet turf, and rain is likely.
Great Island, the likely “A” of the Chad Brown set, comes in from a credible second-place finish in the Flower Bowl (G1). The cut back in trip from that race to this one should help her along, and she is not likely facing a horse as good as War Like Goddess this time around. With tactical versatility and top local rider Rafael Hernandez in the irons, Great Island is a contender — as long as she can handle rain-affected footing, which is a question.
Chad Brown’s other entrant is Kalifornia Queen. She has yet to win a stakes since coming to America; her last stakes-level victory came in a G2 in her home country of Germany over a year ago. She has some rapport with Flavien Prat, and has mile and a quarter stamina, but tends to be an underneath type against this quality of company, and is not at her best over wetter ground.
Mutamakina, one of a pair for Christophe Clement, got the jump on Etoile in the Dance Smartly and stands to do so again this time. She can succeed from on the pace or just off of it, and this mile and a quarter is her best distance. Dylan Davis could get her a very similar trip as last time, though she is hit-or-miss on rain-affected going.
Clement also sends out La Dragontea, winner of the Canadian (G2). On the stretch out from the nine furlongs of the Canadian, La Dragontea may end up setting the pace in this spot. She has enough form at the mile and a quarter to suggest the stretch out could suit her. She will need to run her best, but the pace suits, and with showers in the forecast she may get the softer footing she loves.
Waliyak ships stateside for trainer Roger Varian, who is very shrewd when sending a horse overseas. Waliyak comes into this race with Group-level form, a second in a key G3 at Sandown and then a win in a G3 over soft turf at Chantilly. With rain predicted that soft-turf victory helps her case. Though, she may run into a similar issue as Etoile: she is a closer and the pace will not be hot.
Locals Court Return and Merveilleux, Brendan Walsh shipper Family Way, and French-based Keyflower complete the lineup. Among those, Keyflower is the most interesting as a longshot candidate; though her win last out came on good ground, she has good enough recent efforts over soft and heavy to benefit from the rain over the weekend.
