Though Charlie Appleby, trainer of Dance to the Music, is well regarded for his shippers, he has only won this race twice and his shipper last year disappointed at odds-on in a big field. She does have tactical speed against Europeans, but it’s a question of if she can get that close in North America.
Deep Learning, the Chad Brown trainee, appeals because she is the only horse in the field to try two turns. And, she won that race with flair, graduating by 3 ¼ lengths in a maiden special weight at Saratoga. She can work a clean trip from the outside, and it appeals that Flavien Prat ships out to ride.
Natalma Stakes Exotic Possibilities
The pace makes the race, as they say, and that’s good news for Pina Colada. A price horse for Mark Casse, a prodigious Natalma winner, Pina Colada broke poorly on debut but set the pace last out and just missed. She should be able to get her way up front under high-percentage local rider Sahin Civaci and she dug in well enough last out to suggest she has grit.
Hot Mash, a last-out maiden winner at Ellis, may be the one in closest range of the pacesetter. She tracked a faster pace in a shorter race last out, so it remains to be seen whether she is going to track again over this longer distance or go for it early under Joel Rosario. But, she won her debut in a romp and her pedigree suggests the step up in trip could be very good for her.
Corsia Veloce has to deal with the rail, but if jockey Fraser Aebly can get her out well, her stalking style should have her in the mix down the lane. She is one of only two horses in the field with two wins, as she comes in after a maiden race on all-weather and a better outing winning the Catch a Glimpse on the grass. The post is a challenge but the trajectory is good and she may be a better price than she should be because of her Woodbine-focused people.
