Preakness Stakes 2021

The American Triple Crown series continues on Saturday, May 13 with the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes. A field of 10 of the best three-year-olds in the country will line up for the 1 3/16-mile, $1 million race, one of the most important horse races of the year.

The field includes Medina Spirit, who crossed the wire first in the Kentucky Derby, as well as intriguing foes Concert Tour, Midnight Bourbon, and Crowded Trade.

Free Preakness Picks

Though the Preakness Stakes has a better win rate for favorites than any of the other Triple Crown races, with the chalk winning about half the time, that still means longer shots also come in just under half the time. Let’s learn about the top 2021 Preakness contenders, and figure out who has the best chances to run well in the second jewel of the Triple Crown!

Preakness Stakes Handicapping

Medina Spirit will be the favorite in the Preakness Stakes, assuming a pre-race drug test comes back clean and he is allowed to run. Trainer Bob Baffert’s Derby winners always run well in the Preakness. And, the combination of his frontrunning style and his grit when challenged give him an excellent running style for the Preakness.

Midnight Bourbon had early trouble in the Kentucky Derby. He ran surprisingly well to come off the pace for sixth given that his more natural style has him upfront. He reliably runs to his company, and his trainer Steve Asmussen historically makes a better showing in the Preakness than he does in the Kentucky Derby.

Concert Tour will be one of the shorter prices in the Preakness Stakes, though the Bob Baffert “A” horse typically outruns the “other” Baffert. He will be part of a lively front end, and he hasn’t quite proven that he has the same guts upfront as his stablemate does. Concert Tour should be part of the pace but will be an underlay on the tote board.

Crowded Trade is one of two from the Chad Brown barn, and the better one. He hit the board in a pair of New York preps for the Kentucky Derby, and his relative inside post is a help. His trainer has also won the Preakness before with a lightly-raced horse who had to take a step forward to contend, Cloud Computing in 2017.

Preakness Stakes Longshots

The most intriguing longshots in the Preakness Stakes are Rombauer and Unbridled Honor.

Rombauer finished only third in the Blue Grass (G2) behind Essential Quality and Highly Motivated. That day he showed that he could run a good race from closer to the pace than he ever had before. That tactical pace should help him given how Pimlico tends to play. And, trainer Michael McCarthy’s shippers are always very well placed.

Unbridled Honor will be running late for trainer Todd Pletcher. Though Pletcher has struggled in the Preakness, Unbridled Honor is a horse who is getting good at the right time. He has some pedigree upside for the stretch out to 1 3/16 miles. A win may be a lot to ask, but he could pick up some pieces late to invade the exotics.
