Saturday, January 29 is one of the biggest days in horse racing betting! The $1 million race covers a mile and an eighth on the grass, which is a perfect distance to draw a mixture of middle-distance and long-distance turf runners.
Previously known as the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap, it was rechristened the Pegasus World Cup Turf in 2019. Eventual Horse of the Year Bricks and Mortar won the race in 2019, an excellent start to a new tradition. This year, 2021 winner Colonel Liam will try to become the first two-time winner of the Pegasus World Cup Turf.

Pegasus World Cup Turf Favorites
The pair of favorites in the Pegasus World Cup Turf hail from the same barn: Gulfstream stalwart Todd Pletcher. #6 Colonel Liam won the Pegasus Turf last year when it was run at a sixteenth of a mile longer than this. However, Colonel Liam is a G1 winner already at this distance as well and is a perfect 2-for-2 at Gulfstream. He has the tactical speed to work a good trip, too.
The major question with Colonel Liam is the layoff since he has not run since a disappointing tilt at the Manhattan (G1) last June. Though Pletcher shines with layoff horses and Colonel Liam himself has always mustered sharp efforts off the bench. So, he should be competitive.
Pletcher’s other runner is mired on the far outside, #12 Never Surprised. Though it is his first time facing older horses, this move from the Tropical Park Derby to the Pegasus Turf looks familiar: it is the same thing Pletcher did with Colonel Liam last year. However, he stands to lose a lot of ground, and with Channel Cat and Doswell also in the field, he will have to be hard used to get (much less keep) the lead.
#8 Sacred Life will also take significant action; Chad Brown trainees always do, especially on the lawn, though early odds are actually quite appealing. With several speed horses drawn into the race, his off-pace style suits. And, he has a win at a mile and an eighth. He is a better horse than he was when he tried the Pegasus two years ago, and has an excellent win chance.
Pegasus World Cup Turf Value Horses
Trainer Michael Maker, who won the 2020 edition of the Pegasus Turf with Zulu Alpha, has four of the twelve entrants this year. The most interesting of the group is the #9 Field Pass. A tactically versatile sort, he should be able to work a good trip. He won his only previous race at Gulfstream, has never missed the board at a mile and an eighth, and keeps excellent turf rider Umberto Rispoli from his last-out G2 win in California.
Another Maker entrant to look at, particularly for the deeper exotics, is #2 Atone. Though Atone was defeated in the Fort Lauderdale (G2) last out by Doswell, Doswell won’t have it easy upfront. Atone, on the other hand, could work out an excellent trip attacking the speed late under Javier Castellano.
Another longshot to look at is #4 March to the Arch. He has been running mostly miles lately, but is three-for-six in nine-furlong races and also two-for-five over the sometimes finicky Gulfstream turf course. With back class, pace versatility and a Gulfstream-based rider who can succeed at a price, do not ignore March to the Arch in exotics.
