San Diego Handicap Favorites
Country Grammer or Mandaloun are most likely to go off favored in the San Diego Handicap. Between the two, Mandaloun is a little more interesting. Off of two disappointing tries he will probably be second-choice in this race. Brad Cox does not often ship west — but Mandaloun has shown up at multiple US tracks and he may be betting that the west-coast handicap division isn’t as tough as the horses out east.
Whether that is true or false may depend on whether Country Grammer can hold his Middle East form in California. He may: he looked like he was on the come last year when winning the Hollywood Gold Cup. He has never tried Del Mar, and some Santa Anita horses do not like Del Mar. But, he has tactical speed for a Bob Baffert barn well proven in this race.
San Diego Handicap Best Bet
The most interesting horse in the San Diego Handicap, and the best bet, is Tripoli. His form is muddied a bit with an off-the-board turf try last out, but between the surface switch and the trip trouble he has plenty of upside. He showed his best form last year at Del Mar, running second in this race en route to winning the Pacific Classic. Del Mar can be quirky enough that horses-for-the course can win at a price.
It also helps that his trainer, John Sadler, shines in this race. Sadler has won the race five times, including with Accelerate and Catalina Cruiser, and despite that success still tends to take less money than the likes of Bob Baffert.
Longer Shots in the San Diego Handicap
Defunded is the Bob Baffert “B”, behind Country Grammer. He has class to prove against a group like this, but he is also the speed of the speed, and pace has been playing nicely so far in dirt routes at Del Mar. His form through the spring was good, and his only two-turn outing at Del Mar was a strong enough allowance win to suggest the course suits him well.
For the deepest exotics, Parnelli appeals. His trainer John Shirreffs often comes live to this race, and this horse has been growing into himself in his last two starts. He is a better horse than he was as an early-season sophomore last year, the last time he tried graded stakes. And, he has a strong record at Del Mar, a win and three money finishes in four tries. Expect him to use his tactical speed to try and enrich the exotics.
