The Grade 1 Keeneland Turf Mile is one of the most important prep races for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Mile (G1). The race will be contested Saturday, October 9 at Keeneland. The race offers a $750,000 purse, as well as a Win and You’re In bid to the Breeders’ Cup Mile for its winner.
Even though the Breeders’ Cup will be contested across the country this year, at Del Mar, this race in Kentucky still drew a large and classy field, including defending Keeneland Turf Mile champion Ivar and last year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Order of Australia. The race drew a full field of 13 horses to go a mile on the Keeneland lawn, and the Breeders’ Cup picture should look significantly clearer after the race.

The Most Interesting Longshot
With thirteen horses entered in the Keeneland Turf Mile, it is exactly the kind of place where a longshot can shine. #11 Diamond Oops will be a huge price, and yet he has an excellent chance to win the Keeneland Turf Mile.
Though he has been going shorter in recent races, Diamond Oops is effective at a large range of surfaces and distances, and even came in a close second in this same race two years ago. He is tactically versatile enough to handle the near-outside draw, and his rider Florent Geroux has a strong habit of riding well on the biggest race days. This all adds up to a live longshot.
Other Major Contenders
Though #7 Pixelate still has to prove himself at the Grade 1 level, there is every chance he can. He is in strong form right now, coming off of a decisive win in the Mint Million (G3) against several of the foes he will face again in this spot. Even though many of his recent races have been over longer than the mile, he has been consistent when cut back to this trip. He is also tactical enough to carve out a trip in a perhaps chaotic full field.
#10 Order of Australia ships out for Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien. The last time he shipped to Keeneland worked out well: he won the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) last year at 73/1 odds. Even though he has won just one time since, he has been keeping Group 1 company in France in his last two starts and doing well. He should appreciate the return to better ground at Keeneland, and he does handle shipping well.
#4 Space Traveller makes the third start of the American phase of his career. He has run well in his last two races, including a second-place finish in the Woodbine Mile (G1) last time out. It is a good sign that Daniel Tudhope ships from Europe to North America to ride him (and only him) on Saturday, and Space Traveller should be flying home down the lane.
Even though defending champion #6 Ivar will take money for trainer Paulo Lobo, the fact that he has been spending more time laid off than racing this year raises red flags at a short price. However, Lobo has a longer-priced entrant who seems far more interesting, especially for exotics: #3 In Love.
In Love will have to prove his class, as he has not yet won a graded stakes race yet. But, the Brazilian-bred has found his stride in America in his last two, winning an allowance at Arlington Park before following it up with a restricted stakes win at Kentucky Downs. This tactically versatile horse has gotten into his best form ever with rider Alex Achard, and they could surprise.
