2022 MLB Trade Deadline Picks: Where Will Josh Bell Land?

The Washington Nationals are in last place in Major League Baseball and with news that the team’s star player Juan Soto turned down a monster deal to re-sign with the club, the expectations are the team is going to be moving as many pieces as it can at the 2022 MLB trade deadline. One of those pieces is first baseman Josh Bell.

Bell has emerged as one of the most talked about players as the trade deadline, which is August 2, approaches. Bell will become a free agent at the end of the season and it is very likely that the Nationals will move him rather than lose him for nothing in free agency.

The 29-year-old Bell is a switch-hitter, who leads the Nationals with a .302 batting average. He is also first on the team in hits with 107 and RBI’s with 51. Bell’s OBP is .388,. He has a slugging percentage of .492 and an OPS of .879.

Bell’s current contract pays him $6.35 million for this year.

Washington Nationals

As the trade deadline nears, Josh Bell’s name has often been followed by the phrase, “who will be traded.” With that, it’s very unlikely that he stays with the Nationals past the trade deadline. Bell is having a career year this season and if the Nationals keep him for the remainder of the 2022 MLB season, the odds are good that he will leave the club for nothing to sign a lucrative free agency deal when the season ends.

I don’t see the Nationals running the risk of getting nothing for Bell.

Houston Astros

The Houston Astros are making a run for the best record in the American League. Houston is currently two games behind the AL — and MLB — leading New York Yankees. Despite being one of the best teams in baseball in 2022, the Astros are looking to make improvements ahead of the 2022 MLB trade deadline. One position where the team could use help is first base.

The Astros have Yuli Gurriel in that spot right now. He is hitting .234 with an OBP of .287 and a OPS of .671. Last season Gurriel had a career best .319 with an OBP of .383 and an OPS of .846. His WAR was also a career best 3.7. This season, Gurriel has a WAR of 0.0.

Houston looks like it could be the best fit for Bell, who hails from Irving, Texas.

Milwaukee Brewers

Like the Astros, Josh Bell would help the Milwaukee Brewers on both offense and defense. Milwaukee has Rowdy Tellez at first. Tellez is leading the Brewers in RBI’s with 58, but his batting average of .230 and his OBP of .308 leave something to be desired. Bell would also be an improvement over Tellez on the field thanks to his better defensive runs saved and outs above average.

The Brewers are in fifth place in the National League. They finished the 2021 season in third place and they will be looking to make improvements to their line up before the 2022 MLB trade deadline comes.

Our pick

The Astros went to the World Series in 2021, but they lost to the Atlanta Braves in six games. I expect the team will be very aggressive in looking to shore up any gaps it has in the hopes of getting back to the Fall Classic — and winning.

With that, I see Josh Bell playing in Houston after the 2022 MLB trade deadline.

Pick: Josh Bell to play for the Houston Astros after the 2022 MLB trade deadline.
