The 2022 MLB Draft is fast approaching. Last year, MLB pushed the entry draft back to the All-Star break in order to get better coverage for the event. Before that change, the draft took place during the first week of June. The 2022 MLB entry draft begins on Sunday, July 17 and the event lasts three days. There are 20 rounds in the draft.
The 2022 MLB Draft takes place in the following order (team followed by 2021 regular season record): 1. Baltimore Orioles (52-110) 2. Arizona Diamondbacks (52-110) 3. Texas Rangers (60-102) 4. Pittsburgh Pirates (61-101) 5. Washington Nationals (65-97) 6. Miami Marlins (67-95) 7. Chicago Cubs (71-91) 8. Minnesota Twins (73-89) 9. Kansas City Royals (74-88) 10. Colorado Rockies (74-87) 11. Druw Jones
The son of five-time MLB All-Star Andruw Jones, the 18-year-old Druw Jones reminds MLB scouts of his father. An outfielder, Druw, does not have the same build as his dad — he is taller and leaner — but the young man’s upside seems to be close to his father’s. Jones is the best defensive player among high school players this year and although his hitting is a work in progress, he shows promise at the plate.
Jones has a strong arm and his top-notch defense makes him a potential shortstop as well.
Elijah Green
Like Druw Jones, Elijah Green is the son of a former pro athlete. The 18-year-old Green is the son of former NFL Pro Bowl tight end Eric Green, something that might be apparent in his 6-foot-3, 225-pound frame.
Green has power at the plate and he can drive the ball. However, there have been some concerns about how he will perform once he faces fastballs at the MLB level and some scouts are also worried about how he will adjust to pitchers who have a larger toolbox to work from than the hurlers he is facing while playing for IMG Academy.
Green has good speed and is a capable base stealer. That speed suits him well in the outfield and allows him to cover a great deal of the playing field.
Jackson Holliday
Jackson Holliday is another potential top draft pick with a former professional athlete as a father. In Holliday’s case, that player is seven-time MLB All-Star Matt Holliday. The younger Holliday is a great hitter, however, he struggled at points by trying to hit every pitch out of the part. The 6-foot-1, 175 pound player has committed to play college ball at Oklahoma State for his uncle Josh, who serves as the head coach for that team. Matt also helps coach the team as a volunteer.
Besides power at the plate, the left-handed hitting Holliday has good speed and his throwing arm is developing. He is playing shortstop in high school and his defensive speed and baseball smarts could help him stick at that spot in the big leagues.
Our pick
Druw Jones is the best player in the 2022 MLB Draft pool, but the Baltimore Orioles might not pick him with the first selection because the team has gone with outfielders in the past two drafts, picking Heston Kjerstad with the No. 2 selection overall in 2020 and Colton Cowser with the fifth overall pick in 2021. With that, I think Baltimore looks to the infield in 2022 and goes with Jackson Holliday.
Pick: Jackson Holliday to go first overall in the 2022 MLB draft.
