With their season on the line, the Los Angeles Dodgers will start the best pitcher in baseball in game four of the National League Division Series. Clayton Kershaw will look for his first win of this postseason when taking on the St. Louis Cardinals, tonight at 5:07 PM ET at Busch Stadium. Shelby Miller gets the start for the Cardinals.
Kershaw is the favorite to win the NL Cy Young Award and is also in contention for the NL MVP; but he failed miserably in game one of the series, giving up eight earned runs over 6.2 innings and blowing a 6-1 lead.
The biggest concern about Kershaw is the fact that he has allowed 15 runs over 10 2/3 innings in his last two postseason starts against St. Louis. The good news for the Dodgers is Kershaw is 2-0 with a 0.47 ERA in three career starts on three days’ rest, including the postseason.
Kershaw had a marvelous regular season, posting a 21-3 record with a 1.77 ERA. But the postseason is his biggest question mark.
“There’s always something to prove. This game is very humbling,” said Kershaw. “I try not to look at all the numbers and all the stats, just try to go out and try to win a game for us (Tuesday). You try to stay on as even keel as you possibly can and just prepare for the next one.”
Countering Kershaw for the Cardinals is youngster Shelby Miller, who will be making his first ever postseason start. Miller is a right-handed pitcher with a 10-9 regular season record and a 3.74 ERA; he had a 0-1 mark this season against the Dodgers in two starts.
Los Angeles is the favorite in the money line, rated -162; St. Louis is +152.
