Mariners Are Favored to Beat the Tigers With Bryce Miller Pitching

When will the Seattle Mariners catch fire? This is a question that a lot of fans have on their mind, as the young team is hovering right around .500 right now. The hope is that the Ms can separate themselves from other AL West sides soon and they have a great chance to do so this week in a series vs. Detroit. And come Friday, the Mariners are favored to beat the Tigers with Bryce Miller pitching.

Miller made his MLB debut earlier this season. In total, he has made two starts since being called up by Seattle and he has looked like one of the best pitchers in the bigs. At only 24 years old, the future is quite bright for the young, right-handed pitcher. A lot of Mariners fans are excited about what he’ll be able to get done not only for the rest of this season, but in future campaigns as well.

What’s going to help Miller in start No. 3 for him this week is that the Tigers lineup has struggled to stay consistent this year. A lot of people thought that Javier Baez, one of the best defensive infielders in the game, would be able to record a standout 2023 season. However, he has looked rough early on this year. We don’t expect him to get back on track vs. the Mariners, especially with Miller on the bump.

According to the best-rated sportsbooks, which includes the reliable Bovada review, the Mariners hold -115 MLB betting odds to post a win in this one. The Tigers currently hold +125 odds despite being the home team. Yes, Seattle’s lineup hasn’t lived up to the hype either, but something tells us their star players will be ready to answer the call on Friday at Comerica Park. We’re going with Seattle as our pick.

The Mariners and Tigers should cover the under in this one

Looking at this contest as a whole, the Mariners and Tigers should cover the under in this one. While a lot of the focus is on Miller, and rightfully so, the Tigers will be sending out Alex Faedo to start on Friday too. Faedo is 0-1 on the year, but with a respectable 3.86 ERA. He doesn’t have a ton of experience under his belt either, but fans are excited about the former first-round pick’s potential.

Faedo made his MLB debut with the Tigers last season. The hope is that the 27-year-old hurler can take his game to the next level this season. With Miller, he’s been incredibly sharp in his first two starts. A lot of the attention in Seattle for their starting rotation goes to Luis Castillo, but Miller already has people thinking that he could be an All-Star caliber player down the road. The hype is real surrounding him.

β€œHe threw a lot of really good fastballs on the inside part of the plate. You see more veteran pitchers who are more comfortable pitching inside doing that,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said in an interview with The Athletic on his young pitcher. β€œHe’s very aggressive, he has a ton of confidence and he’s not backing off.”

With both Miller and Faedo getting the starts in this one, it could prove to be a rough day for both the Seattle and Detroit hitters. Miller is going to want to prove to people that his first two starts weren’t a fluke. The over/under for this matchup has been set at seven runs, with -110 MLB betting odds for both. We don’t expect a lot of runs to be scored in this contest, which is why we’re rocking with the under.

Julio Rodriguez will hope to make a splash vs. the Tigers

One thing to keep an eye on in this one is that Julio Rodriguez will hope to make a splash vs. the Tigers on Friday night. Unfortunately, it has been a down season thus far for J-Rod. After winning AL Rookie of the Year honors in 2022, a lot of people thought Rodriguez would put up some huge numbers in 2023 – especially after he signed his massive contract extension with the club.

Things haven’t looked too strong there, though. As of this writing, Rodriguez is hitting a lowly .204, with only six home runs and 15 RBI. This has been a total 180 production wise from what we were able to see out of the young slugger last season. While there’s still plenty of time this spring, summer and fall for Rodriguez to get things back on the right track, countless folks are hoping he can start to heat up sooner than later.

The question begs, will Rodriguez be able to hit a homer on Friday night at Comerica Park? Per the oddsmakers, Rodriguez holds +1600 odds to hit a dinger against Detroit on Friday. Because of his struggles at the dish, we don’t like his chances of getting that job done, which is why we’re picking against him going yard. We’d love to see Rodriguez prove us wrong, but it’s not looking likely.
