2021 MLB Picks: Who Will Pitch Next No-Hitter This Season?

  • BetUS has odds on who will pitch the next no hitter of the 2021 MLB season
  • Mets ace Jacob deGrom is an obvious favorite (+500) with a league-low 0.71 ERA
  • Four of the six no-hitters this season were pitched within a 15 day span in May

It has almost been three weeks since baseball’s last no-hitter. That would be perfectly normal most years, but it’s almost surprising in a 2021 season that has already seen six pitchers accomplish the feat.

With four full months left in the regular season, it’s safe to say the record for no-hitters in a season (seven) will almost certainly be broken this summer. So, why not speculate on what major league ace will pitch the next one? Before we check the odds, make sure to review our MLB 2021 betting guide for wagering tips and advice.

Jacob deGrom favored for next no-no

A favorite to win his third Cy Young, Jacob deGrom (+500) lowered his ERA to 0.71 last Monday in a 6-2 win over the Diamondbacks. He has an 82-7 strikeout-to-walk ratio and the league is hitting .129 against him. While the Mets ace has no career no-hitters, he pitched a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts against the Nationals earlier this season.

Corbin Burnes (+600) and Trevor Bauer (+650) are viewed as the next most likely candidates to blank their opponents on the scorecard. The Brewers ace has a 2.24 ERA an an eye-popping 81:7 K:BB ratio through 52.1 innings, while the 2020 NL Cy Young winner has yielded only 40 hits while striking out 96, the most in the senior circuit, through 76 1/3 frames.

Gerrit Cole (+700), Max Scherzer (+800) and Shane Bieber (+900) not so surprisingly round out the top five. Cole and Bieber have been enjoying Cy Young caliber campaigns while Max Scherzer, in 2015, became one of only five major league pitchers ever to record two no-hitters in the same season.

What’s the deal with all the no-hitters?

Most are blaming the surge in no-hitters on colder-than-average April and May weather, a new baseball and advanced defensive positioning. This has led to MLB teams averaging 7.82 hits per game through May 19 — the second lowest mark in baseball history behind 1908, according to Baseball Reference.

Swinging for the fences more than ever, hitters are also striking out a record 8.98 times a game. As a result, batting average is at its lowest point (.236) in modern history, and for the fourth consecutive year, strikeouts are outpacing hits.

Four of the six 2021 no-hitters were pitched within 15 days in May, tying June 1990 for the most no-hitters in a calendar month. This is the 11th time in major league history that at least six no-hitters have been thrown in a season, and the six no-hitters were the most through May 19 ever, outpacing 1917 for the fastest start by a few weeks.

While we’re no longer on pace to see more than 20 no-no’s this season after a quiet three weeks, it will be interesting to see how many more there are, and what pitchers accomplish the feat, with four months of regular season baseball left before the postseason and World Series.
