The St. Louis Cardinals will look to avoid going down three games to one in the NLCS when they visit the San Francisco Giants tonight at 8:07 p.m. Eastern at AT&T Park.
The Cards’ bullpen hasn’t been able to dominate the Giants like they did the Dodgers. Tonight, they will trust the arm of youngster Shelby Miller, who will be making his second career postseason start.
Miller’s first playoff appearance – game 3 of the NLDS – ended in a no-decision; he pitched 5.2 innings, allowing five hits and two runs. The Cards ended up winning 3-2.
Miller had a 10-9 record in the regular season with a 3.74 ERA but didn’t pitch against San Francisco. Shelby has one career start at AT&T Park, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing four hits and two runs.
“Even with that one start under your belt, you’re starting in a hectic environment in San Francisco,” Miller said. “It is a big ballpark with a bunch of big gaps. The biggest thing is try to get ground balls, try to keep the ball out of the air as much as possible.”
Ryan Vogelsong will be on the mound for the Giants. Vogelsong won all four of his starts during the Giants’ 2012 World Series run; he has continued his post-season success this year, going 5.1 innings and giving up just one run in the deciding game of the NLDS against the Washington Nationals.
“You can’t replace the way it feels to pitch in the playoffs,” Vogelsong told MLB’s official website. “They all bring a little bit different emotion depending on the game and the situation. It’s going to be intense.”
San Francisco is currently a slight favorite going into tonight’s game. A Giants win pays at -116, while a Cardinals win pays at +106. The over/under sits at seven runs.
