The Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox are in a battle for the top of the 2022 American League Central Division. The Guardians (80-67) are at the top of the division. The White Sox (76-71) are four games behind Cleveland. The teams are involved in an important three-game series that could determine the winner of the AL Central.
In 2021, Chicago had a 93-69 record. That finish put them 13 games ahead of Cleveland(80-82) at the end of the season.
This series is also extremely important for the AL playoff race because it’s likely that the team who finishes in second place in the AL Central in 2022 will be out of the AL Wild Card race. The White Sox are trailing the Blue Jays, Rays, Mariners and Orioles in the hunt for a Wild Card spot.

Guardians vs. White Sox pitching
Lance Lynn gets the start on Wednesday night for the White Sox. The 35-year-old right-hander has started 18 games for Chicago and put together a 7-5 record. Lynn, who has thrown for five teams during a career that began in 2011, has an ERA of 3.99 this year. He has thrown 103.2 innings and picked up 113 strikeouts. He had a career-low ERA last season, at 2.69.
The Guardians have Triston McKenzie starting for them on Wednesday night. A 25-year-old right-hander, McKenzie has started a career-high 27 games this year for Cleveland. McKenzie has a 10-11 record and an ERA of 3.08 this year. He has thrown 172 innings and picked up 167 strikeouts. The numbers McKenzie, who is in his third year with the Guardians, are the best of his career.
McKenzie might have a losing record this year, but he gets the nod as the better starting pitcher in the September 21 matchup between the Guardians and White Sox.
Guardians vs. White Sox hitting
Cleveland are third in the AL Central in runs scored. Andres Gimenez leads the team with a batting average of .298. The team’s best home run hitter is Jose Ramirez with 28. Ramirez also leads the club in RBI’s with 113. Amed Rosario has the most hits for the Cleveland club at 165. Steven Kwan is tops on OBP at .370 and Ramirez has the best OPS at .882.
Chicago leads the AL Central in runs scored this season. Jose Abreu is pacing the club in hitting. Abreu leads the White Sox in batting average (.309), OBP (.383), hits (172) and OPS (.835). As for home runs, Andrew Vaughn leads the club with 17. He also has the most RBI’s on the team at 73.
The White Sox get the nod here, simply because they score more runs.
As mentioned above, the Guardians do not score as many runs (617) as the White Sox (642). However, Cleveland is better at keeping their opponents off the board, allowing 581 runs, whereas Chicago has allowed 642 runs.
The teams are close over their past 10 games, with Cleveland going 8-2 and Chicago with a 7-3 record.
The White Sox are the home team here and they are 35-37 on their own field. Meanwhile, Cleveland has an away record of 40-35.
This is going to be a closely contested game, but I think Cleveland gets it done.
Pick: Cleveland Guardians to beat Chicago White Sox.
