A critical National League series kicks off tonight — Monday, September 19 — when the New York Mets travel to Wisconsin to face the Milwaukee Brewers. The teams play in a three-game series.
The Mets are the top team in the NL East with a record of 93-55, but the Atlanta Braves are right behind New York with a 91-55 record. The Mets enter the Milwaukee series on a four-game winning streak and are 6-4 in their last 10.
The Brewers are in second place in the NL Central with a record of 78-67. They trail the St. Louis Cardinals by seven games, but Milwaukee remains in the NL Wild Card race. The Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, and San Diego Padres are at the top of the Wild Card right now, but Milwaukee is only out of the mix by 1.5 games. The Phillies and Padres both have 80-66 records. Milwaukee is on a two-game winning streak and 7-3 in their 10 most recent outings.

Mets vs. Brewers pitching
The Mets got some good news on the pitching front. Max Scherzer, who was out with an oblique injury, will be reinstated from the 15-day injured list. He is expected to start tonight’s game. Scherzer has not started a contest since he went five innings in a 7-1 loss to the Nationals on September 3. Scherzer has started 20 games this year and has a 9-4 record to go with an ERA of 2.26, which is among the best in MLB. He has thrown 127.2 innings and has 153 strikeouts, which is second on the team behind Chris Bassitt, who has 10 more strikeouts in 171 innings thrown.
Corbin Burnes is expected to take the mound for the Brewers. Burnes is not throwing as well as he did in his Cy Young-winning season last year, but he’s not far off that mark. He’s started 29 games and put up a 10-7 record with an ERA of 2.97. Burnes has thrown a career-high 179 innings and has 219 strikeouts, which trail his 234 in 167 innings from last year.
Scherzer is a three-time Cy Young winner. Burnes is the defending NL Cy Young award winner. With Scherzer coming off the injured list, I’m giving the slight edge to Milwaukee in starting pitching.
Mets vs. Brewers hitting
The New York Mets have some of the most potent bats in the National League. Jeff McNeil is third in the NL in batting average at .320, while slugger Pete Alonso is tied for third with 35 home runs. Alonso leads the NL in RBIs with 115. As for hits, Francisco Lindor is the team leader with 153. McNeil is tops on the team with an OBP of .377 and Alonso leads the Mets in OPS at .850.
The Brewers’ batting is not as strong as the Mets. Christian Yelich leads the team with a .262 average, 135 hits, and an OBP of .361. Meanwhile, Willy Adams is tops on the club in home runs (30) and RBIs (92).
The Mets have the advantage in hitting.
Mets vs. Brewers
The Mets have scored 695 runs this season and allowed 549 for an impressive plus 146 run differential. Milwaukee is also on the plus side in that department with 664 runs scored and 638 surrendered.
This is going to be an interesting game because we don’t know what to expect from Scherzer. With that being said, with the playoffs being as close as they are, I don’t think the Mets would risk putting him on the mound if he isn’t ready.
Pick: New York Mets to beat Milwaukee Brewers.
