2021 MLB Player Futures: National League Cy Young Race Heats Up

  • BetOnline has updated odds for the National League Cy Young with Jacob deGrom on the shelf
  • Walker Buehler (+250) is the favorite to win the award but faces stiff competition from Zach Wheeler (+400)
  • The Brewers have three starters in the race with Brandon Woodruff (+450), Corbin Burnes (+450) and Freddy Peralta (+1100)

Jacob deGrom was a -700 lock to win his third-career NL Cy Young award less than a month ago. But with the news that he will be out until at least September with inflammation in his pitching elbow, the 33-year-old Mets ace has plummeted to sixth on the board at +700.

What five National League starters have moved ahead in the Cy Young race? Let’s review the latest odds and make sure to check out our MLB 2021 betting guide for further baseball betting tips and advice with the World Series under three months away.

Buehler leads the pack

Walker Buehler (+250) was named the NL pitcher of the month in July, posting a 3-0 record with a 1.67 ERA and 38 strikeouts in his five starts. Heading into Tuesday night’s tilt with Houston, the Dodgers righthander was 11-1 with a 2.19 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP.

A workhorse for the Phillies this season, Zack Wheeler (+400) leads the MLB in innings-pitched (146.2) and his 170 strikeouts tops the National League. While his 8-6 record shows his teammates haven’t done him any favors this season, his 2.45 ERA and other underlying metrics are strong.

Next on the list at +450 are a couple of Brewers – Brandon Woodruff and Corbin Burnes. The 28-year-old Woodruff ranks third or better among NL pitchers in ERA (2.26), strikeouts (152) and WHIP (0.88) and is fifth in innings pitched (131 1/3).

The 26-year-old Burnes isn’t among the NL’s top 20 in innings, however, ranks in the 95th percentile or better in nearly every notable Statcast metric. Milwaukee’s Freddy Peralta (+1100) could also muddy the vote as he’s leading the majors in WHIP (0.87) and hits allowed per nine innings (3.9) while pacing the NL in ERA (2.17).

Kevin Gausman (+500) is the fifth and final guy on top of deGrom on the board. The Giants starter has struggled in the second half, failing to get past the fifth inning in three consecutive starts.

Is deGrom done?

Jacob deGrom (+700) was having a much better season than any of the hurlers mentioned above, posting a 7-2 record with a stellar 1.08 ERA in 92 innings. The Mets ace was even on pace to break Bob Gibson’s legendary ERA record of 1.12 ERA, but sadly now won’t have enough innings to qualify.

If deGrom can return for five memorable September starts and finishes with an ERA under 1.00, he’ll give himself a chance against the award contenders who eclipse 200 innings. However, in what could be one of the tightest Cy Young votes in years, we’re backing the Brewers’ Brandon Woodruff (+450) to squeak it out.
