The fallout of the Rafael Devers trade has largely waned, allowing the Red Sox to focus on winning in July. A strong push in the mid-summer month could make the difference in making Boston buyers or sellers at the July 31 trade deadline.
Although selling Devers could be attributed as a clear sign Boston is out of contention this season, there are reasons to believe otherwise. Ridding themselves of Devers’ large contract was clearly the main focus of the trade for Boston given their meager return, a move that is motivated by more long-term financial goals. With an extra $30 million to spend with Devers off the books in 2025, Boston is at liberty to go big or go home.
Notably, Alex Bregman’s agent voiced his client’s interest in signing a new contract with Boston this year. The All-Star candidate suffered a right quad injury in May and has yet to return to the field. Bregman has been praised by coaching staff for his work mentoring Anthony, Campbell and Marcelo Mayer, the young third baseman excelling in Bregman’s absence.

A 10-6 win on Tuesday night in Toronto boosted the Blue Jays up to 42-36. The victory over Cleveland puts them firmly in the playoff picture as we approach the halfway mark of the 2025 MLB season. It was also Vladimir Guerrero’s 270th multi-hit game in Toronto blue, already placing him 9th on the all-time list. Records like those justify the 26-year-old’s half-billion dollar contract he signed earlier this season.
On the topic of finances, Toronto has reportedly thrown their name into the hat to acquire the services of Boston’s Walker Buehler. Buehler signed a one-year, $21 million contract this winter as a sort of rental contract after a quiet free agency. The former Dodger closed out the World Series against the Yankees following a strong postseason. If Buehler can improve on his current form, his stint may be short in Boston.
Additionally, Toronto made a trade this Wednesday. The Blue Jays sent Colby Martin to the Miami Marlins in exchange for Robinson Pina, who was promptly assigned to Triple-A Buffalo. The trade comes despite rumors of Miami trading some of their current pitching staff. Pina could serve as a backup option in case the return of Max Scherzer is a rocky one. Scherzer has been dealing with various injuries as he approaches his 41st birthday.
Blue Jays vs Red Sox Betting Prediction
The Red Sox have been one of the unluckier teams in baseball. With a poor record in one-run games and a pitching staff decimated by injuries, there’s a strong argument Boston deserves to be above .500. Compound that with an always treacherous division, and there’s a legitimate chance Boston finishes last in the division with nearly 80 wins.
Toronto has more Ws in the win column, but they haven’t played a game in the AL East in a month and a half. Their underlying statistics indicate they actually deserve a sub-.500 winning record, as evidenced by FanGraph’s BaseRuns depth charts.
The probable pitchers for both sides indicates a fairly even matchup, as Brayan Bello opposes Jose Berrios. Both pitchers sport 3 wins alongside an ERA around 3.40. Boston has been better against RHP than LHP this season, so Berrios is a welcome sight for the Red Sox. Given I believe both sides are close in talent, I can’t help but think there is value on Boston here.
If I chalk both teams up as even, the home field advantage for the Red Sox should put them around (-115). So at a pick’em of (-105), there is some value here. Pinnacle opened the Red Sox as underdogs but have now moved them to favorites, indicating sharps placed some early coin on Boston.
