ALCS Game 1: Red Sox vs. Astros Betting Odds & Picks

  • Date & Location: Friday, October 15 , 2021 at Minute Made Park, Houston, Texas.
  • Odds: Boston Red Sox (+124) vs. Houston Astros (-134) via Sportsbetting.
  • Prediction: Red Sox to win Game 1 of ALCS

The Boston Red Sox secured their place in the American League Playoffs with a win over the New York Yankees in the AL Wild Card. The team’s prize for winning that single-game playoff was a first-round matchup against the defending American League pennant-winning Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS. Boston bested Tampa 3-1 in the series. The Red Sox now face the Houston Astros on the American League Championship Series.

Houston finished the 2021 MLB season with a 95-67 record. They were the top team in the AL West and played the Chicago White Sox, who they topped 3-1 in the ALDS to claim their fifth straight spot in the ALDS.

The Red Sox and Astros played in the 2018 ALCS, Boston won that series 4-1. Boston won the World Series that year. The team has not been back to the Series since then. Houston made it to the World Series in 2017 and 2019. They won in 2017.

Players to watch

Kiki Hernandez of the Red Sox hit .435 against the Rays in the ALDS and had two home runs and 10 RBI’s. Most teams who succeed in the playoffs have one player who steps up and exceeds expectations. Hernandez was that player against the favored Rays. With the momentum he has now, he could be a player the Sox ride to the World Series.

Alex Bregman, Carlos Correa, and Jose Altuve: It’s no surprise that these three players are at the top of the Astros batting leaders entering the ALCS. Bregman hit .375 with four RBI’s. Correa hit .385 with four RBI’s and Altuve connected at .313 with one home run and three RBI’s.

Yordan Alvarez is the player the Astros will count on and the Red Sox should be worried about. Alvarez hit 33 homers, 104 RBI with a .877 OPS during the regular season. He did well against Boston in 2021 with seven hits, including three doubles and one home run in 20 trips to the plate.

What to watch

Neither of these teams has what one would consider a go to pitching ace and with that offense will probably determine the outcome of this game and series. Houston is the better team on that front, but Boston has the momentum.

The series format could play a role. This seven-game series will have a 2-3-2 format and that means if the Red Sox can “steal” one of the first two home games, they will go back to Boston with a lot of confidence in playing three games in Fenway Park.

Pick

With the way the Red Sox handled the Rays, who again, were favored over Boston, it won’t be a surprise to see Boston make it to the World Series. They put momentum on their side with the win over the Yankees to make it to the ALDS and the series win over Tampa Bay only gave the team more confidence.
