Divisional races heating up

The Dodgers (+325) have gone 16-4 with a plus-57 run differential since acquiring Max Scherzer and Trea Turner at the trade deadline, but still sit two games behind the NL West-leading Giants (+750), who are somehow on pace to win 104 games. Expected to fade down the stretch, Bruce Bochy’s club keeps piling up victories, with a 15-5 record since the start of August.

Los Angeles is the better team if Mookie Betts can overcome his ailing hip and Cody Bellinger can regain his MVP form, but San Francisco remains the better bet as year-long overachievers that are strong in every facet of the game.

Sitting at .500 (41-41) on the 4th of July, the Yankees (+900) are just four games behind the Rays (+900) after recording their 10th consecutive win. New York’s pitching has been excellent during the streak, allowing two or fewer runs six times, and their batting order of Luke Voit, Anthony Rizzo, Aaron Judge, Joey Gallo and Giancarlo Stanton is nightmare fuel for opposing pitchers.

The only downside of placing a futures bet on the Bronx Bombers is the very real possibility of them playing a one-game Wild-Card elimination to start the postseason. Still, given that they’ll pitch AL Cy Young contender Gerrit Cole in that game, it’s not the end of the world.

Playoff bound contenders

The Astros (+550) have opened the door for Oakland (+2800) in the AL West, losing 11 of 20 games this August. However, Houston has the MLB’s highest-scoring offense (5.4 runs per game) and is set to welcome back Alex Bregman from injury any day now. Their starting pitching staff also has the second-best ERA (3.48) in baseball so they’ll have the horses to compete with the White Sox (+650) in October.

Coasting to the AL Central crown, Chicago has weathered injuries all season but after already welcoming Eloy Jimenez back in the fold, they’ll soon see Yasmani Grandal and Carlos Rodón return to the lineup.

While many expected them to fold up shop when NL MVP candidate Ronald Acuña Jr. tore the ACL in his right knee on July 10, the Braves (+1600) have instead has caught fire. With a 17-4 start to August, Atlanta has built up a 4.5-game division lead in the NL East thanks to a hard-hitting infield that is closing in on the Astros infield’s 2019 major-league record for home runs.

Finally, the Brewers (+800) have the NL Central locked up after winning 10 of their last 13 games, with former NL MVP Christian Yelich catching fire (.366 average in his last 10 games) at the right time. With three NL Cy Young contenders on staff, Milwaukee can follow the 2019 Washington Nationals’ blueprint of October success.
