Not that long ago the New York Yankees looked like they would end the 2022 Major League Baseball Season with the best record in the American League East, the American League and overall. Those days have passed. The Yankees are very likely to end the year with the best record in the AL East. However, they are currently second to the Houston Astros in the AL. As far as the overall MLB standings, the Yankees trail the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets and the Astros.
In May, the Yankees had a .722 winning percentage. While the team is still playing well, New York’s winning percentage in the middle of August has fallen to .626.
Our focus here is strictly on the American League East, where the Yankees still hold a comfortable lead over the other teams in the division: Toronto Blue Jays, Tampa Bay Rays, Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox.
2022 American League East picks
|To Win 2022 American League East|
|New York Yankees||-5000||-5000|
|Toronto Blue Jays||+1200||+2000|
|Tampa Bay Rays||+5000||+25000|
|Boston Red Sox||+50000||+100000|
New York Yankees Outlook
The Yankees were awe-inspiring during the first half of the 2022 MLB season. The team went into the All-star break with the best record in the majors (64-28). New York also had the highest run differential of any MLB club (plus-199). Things have cooled down since then.
Today, the Yankees are still in first place in the AL East with a 72-43 record and they have improved their run differential to +201, but they are 8-15 since July 21. The team has gone 3-9 since the start of August with losing skids of five games and three games during that stretch.
I still believe the Yankees will end the season winning the AL East, but their chances of winning the AL pennant and the World Series have seemed to dim since the All-Star break.
Toronto Blue Jays Outlook
Entering the 2022 MLB season, there was a lot of talk that this year would be the year for the Blue Jays. The team did not start out as hot as expected. However, they quickly got their feet under them and righted the ship with an eight-game winning streak between May 24 and June 2.
The Blue Jays have faded since July 1. Between then and July 10, the team went 2-9 and while they bounced back with an 11-2 run between July 15 and August 2, the Blue Jays are 2-8 since then. In short, the club has been inconsistent all year. With a record of 61-52, Toronto is 10 games behind the Yankees.
Tampa Bay Rays Outlook
With a 60-53 record, the Tampa Bay Rays are 11 games out of first place in the AL East. Like the Toronto Blue Jays, the Tampa Bay Rays have struggled with consistency. Unlike the Blue Jays, that issue has plagued the team for the entire season. The Rays have the worst away record in the AL East at 25-31.
Baltimore Orioles Outlook
If there is one team in the AL East who has been a positive surprise in the second half of the 2022 MLB season, it has been the Baltimore Orioles. Despite being picked to finish last in the AL by many, a bad first half of the season and being sellers at the trade deadline, Baltimore has suddenly found itself in the hunt for an AL Wild Card spot. Baltimore is 13-9 since July 22. The Orioles aren’t going to win the AL East in 2022, but they have given their fans something to look forward to for the rest of the season and heading into the 2023 MLB campaign.
Boston Red Sox Outlook
The Boston Red Sox were not picked to win the AL East, but they weren’t picked to finish in the basement either, but that’s where they are as the 2022 MLB season winds down. Injuries have taken a huge toll on the Red Sox lineup and they are 57-59 on the season. Boston is the only team with a negative run differential in the American League East at minus 32.
Our pick: Yankees
The Yankees built a monstrous cushion during the first half of the 2022 MLB season and barring a complete collapse from them or an unprecedented winning streak from one of the teams who trail them in the AL East, New York will win their division in 2022.
Pick: New York Yankees to win the AL East in 2022.
