Los Angeles Angels (+132) at Seattle Mariners (-142, 6.5 o/u)
Two of the hottest pitchers in Major League Baseball will square off tonight when Felix Hernandez (10-5, 3.02 ERA) and the Seattle Mariners (39-46, 18-25 Home) host Garrett Richards (9-5, 3.35 ERA) and the Los Angeles Angels (46-38, 21-20 Away) at Safeco Field (10:10 PM Eastern).
The Mariners sit nine games behind the Astros in the AL West and haven’t been able to pick up ground recently, alternating wins and losses in their last seven, including a 5-4 setback to the Tigers last night.
With Hernandez on the mound tonight, the win/loss streak is primed to continue. “King” Felix is 5-0 in his last nine starts against the Angels with a 0.93 ERA.
“He’s got some of the best stuff I’ve ever seen,” Angels right fielder Kole Calhoun said to the Associated Press. “So anytime you can win a game that Felix starts, it’s a good day.”
Los Angeles will counter with righty Garrett Richards, who is one win away from reaching to double-digit wins on the season. Richards has picked up the W in three of his last four starts, including an 8-2 win against the Texas Rangers last time out. The 27-year-old went 7.2 innings, allowing six hits, and just one run in one of his best starts of the season.
Unlike the Mariners, the Angels have been absolutely on fire, winning five in a row and nine of their last ten. They recently swept both the Rangers and Rockies and are now just 1.5 games back of Houston for the division lead.
Last night against Colorado, Johnny Giavotella kept the hot streak alive by driving home Taylor Featherstone with a two-out single in the ninth, breaking a 2-2 tie. Huston Street preserved the one-run lead in the bottom half for his 24th save of the season.
Hot or not, though, there’s no denying LA’s struggles against Hernandez, who is as dominant as any a pitcher in the Majors, especially at home. That’s why the M’s moneyline looks like the better play tonight.
Pick: Mariners -142.
