Best Bets To Win 2023 MotoGP Championship

MotoGP is not the sport where you want to “put all your eggs in one basket.” It’s far more unpredictable than, say, Formula 1. How else do you explain Bagnaia erasing a 91-point deficit last season to improbably win the world championship away from Quartararo? When betting on MotoGP — whether it’s one race or the whole season — you want to “diversify.” That’s why we’re betting on three different riders to win the 2023 MotoGP championship. Here’s who we got:

Francesco Bagnaia

Bagnaia remains the man to beat heading into 2023. His seven wins last season were the highest in the circuit. It was as many wins as the second- and third-place finishers combined for — Quartararo’s four and Bastianini’s three. Speaking of Bastianini though, he is now opposite of Bagnaia on team Ducati. The Italian pairing of Ducati is one of three factory teams that will be different from last season.

The Ducati dynasty is in full swing — they’ve won the Constructor’s Championship three years running — and that gives us confidence Bagnaia will carry over his success. He’ll likely have the machine with the most top-end speed on the grid. Pair that with his own driving skills and you have the makings of a back-to-back champion.

Marc Marquez

We’re not going to understate it: this is a high-risk bet. The risk is, well, Marquez can’t seem to stay healthy. Since 2020, Marquez’s brilliant career has been halted due to injuries — mostly to the arm. An elder statesman of the grid (he is almost 30 years old now), it’s fair to believe Marquez’s body is finally wearing down on him after eight different world championships (six at the MotoGP level).

But despite that risk, we can’t help but want to take a flyer on him. He flashed in 2022, claiming the pole in Motegi and finishing second at Phillip Island. It gives us reason to believe that Marquez has still “got it” when he’s not completely injured.

Honda will also have to do its part. The once-proud team has fallen on hard times as Ducati, KTM, and Aprilia have built better machines. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the bike Honda struts out this year. Any major improvements bolster Marquez’s chances at reclaiming his past glory. For us, that’s a bet worth making in case the stars perfectly align.

Aleix Espargaro

For the majority of the 2022 season, Espargaro was second overall to Quartararo in the season standings. Late-season flurries from Bastianini and Bagnaia eventually pushed him to fourth in the final standings. Still, his consistent form was something to marvel at. DNFs were rare for the Spanish driver and top-5 finishes were the norm.

Of course, a 2023 title for Espargaro hinges on actually winning races. He did so only one time in 2023. Six podium finishes, which Espargaro pulled off, is great and all but world titles aren’t won by merely coming in close. If Espargaro can develop a “killer instinct” on the grid, then watch out. That, plus his high consistency, could make him a dark horse to win it all. Espargaro’s longshot odds scream value in that case.
