Preview Of 2022 Australian GP
Our preview of the Australian Grand Prix actually begins with a recap of the previous event in Thailand. It was an absolute doozy, full of rain, twists, and turns. In the end, a previous winner claimed victory — only it wasn’t any of the riders you’d come to expect. Miguel Oliveira, who hadn’t won since round one, took the checkered flag. He was followed closely by Jack Miller and Bagnaia in that order.
Bagnaia’s third-place finish didn’t vault him to first overall in the world title standings, but he’s oh so close. His 217 points are only two back of leader, Fabio Quartararo. Speaking of the defending champion, he had a day to forget in Thailand. Quartararo never recovered from a bad start and wound up 17th, which earned him zero points in the standings.
Also, it may not feel like it but Aleix Espargaro remains in the title mix. Espargaro struggled himself in Thailand with an 11th-place finish that did earn him five measly championship points. Regardless, he’s only 20 points behind Quartararo.
Only three races remain in the MotoGP season — the looming Australian race, followed by Malaysia and Valencia. The way the season is trending, the world championship will likely come down to the final race. Buckle up, but first, let’s make our Australian Grand Prix predictions below!
Best Bets To Win 2022 MotoGP Australian Grand Prix
This is a return event for Australia, hosting it for the first time since 2019 due to the pandemic. Per usual, the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit will play host to this ever-important competition. We’re going to make two different bets on riders to win the Australian GP. You just have to in this sport, which as it has proven during 2022, is wildly unpredictable. Here’s where our money is going:
Francesco Bagnaia
All eyes are on Ducati and how they game plan for the race. The soon-to-be Constructor’s champions (for the fourth year in a row) not only possess the title favorite Bagnaia but also Enea Bastianini and Miller, who are fourth and fifth, respectively, in the title race. Some believe Ducati can use team orders to spur Bagnaia to victory.
It would be smart, but Bagnaia has already shot down such suggestions. “I know that I can win without help in a race,” he shot back at the media this week and took a subtle jab at Quartararo in the process too. But we agree with Bagnaia wholeheartedly, which is why he’s our go-to bet of the race.
Simply put, all the momentum is on Bagnaia’s side. He has four wins in the past seven races and six overall victories — which is double of Quartararo for perspective. The Italian’s confidence is sky-high and so is ours, hence this betting pick.
Jack Miller
Akin to his Ducati teammates, there’s no shortage of momentum for Miller — both on and off the grid. On the grid, Miler has finished on the podium back-to-back times. Before taking second in Thailand, Miller won outright in Japan.
But life’s even better off the track. He was married this past weekend too. Not a bad way to come home to Australia — with what we can only imagine, a partisan crowd will be awaiting him at Philip Island. Miller has previously finished on the podium on his home turf (back in 2019) so we know he’s certainly capable of winning it all.
Here again, team orders from Ducati are an important variable. No one knows if they have something up their sleeve. But if they don’t, then this race is really Bagnaia or Miller’s to lose given recent events. Throw money on both favored riders and let the best man win is our strategy here.
