2022 MotoGP Italy Grand Prix Preview
Italy has long been a stopping point for MotoGP. The first iteration of the race was in 1949, when it was known as the Gran Premio Delle Nazioni, a routine that continued until 1990. However, the race as we know it today began in 1994, and it’s been an annual staple since. The Mugello Circuit in Tuscany will once again play hosts, and this is where we’ll begin our own 2022 MotoGP Italy GP preview.
The recently-retired Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi long dominated this track. The former won six Italian GP’s in Mugello, while the latter did one better. Rossi’s seven victories is an all-time record. But with Rossi out of the picture, all eyes are on a different Italian.
Of course, we’re talking about the aforementioned Bastianini. After winning the previous Grand Prix de France, Bastianini is now up to three outright victories on the year. For comparison sake, no one has else multiple wins, little less three. But despite this, Bastianini is not atop the standings. Heck, he’s not even in second place. Bastianini’s 94 points is behind Fabio Quartararo (102) and Aleix Espargaró (98).
Speaking of Quartararo, he enters Sunday’s race as the defending champion. The Frenchman won rather convincingly in 2021 and under tough circumstances, too, after Moto3 rider Jason Dupasquier died that weekend during qualifying. Upon winning, Quartararo went to the scene of Dupasquier’s fatal accident before pointing to the sky.
2022 MotoGP Italy GP Betting Picks
The Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello is one of the speedier races in the whole schedule, which adds another layer of unpredictability to the competition. Crashes are not out of the ordinary, and one of those would end your bet instantly. That’s why we’ll be making multiple Italy GP betting picks — it’s the perfect “insurance policy.” Here are two drivers getting bets from us:
Enea Bastianini
Bastianini is the ultimate definition of boom-or-bust. Either the Ducati rider is winning outright or he’ll finish nowhere near the podium. He’s won Round 1, 3, and 7, but everything in between that has been eighth or worse. Our money says the Italian GP, which will be a return home for the countryman, will be on the boom end of the spectrum.
More than anything else, Bastianini just needs to avoid a crash — something he couldn’t do last year. Before the race even began, he collided with teammate Johann Zarco. The accident forced Bastianini to be thrown over the handlebars as he tried to avoid running into nearby bikes. With the crash weighing on him, Bastianini ended up with a DNF. Obviously, that can’t happen again if he’s to cash your betting ticket.
Regardless, we got Bastianini winning. As he showed last time out, he’s every bit capable of running a flawless race and throwing in the home crowd, and a fourth win on the season is very possible for Bastianini.
Francesco Bagnaia
Speaking of crashes, Bagnaia was in one himself at the previous France race, resulting in a DNF. But that’s not deterring us from looking his betting way in Italy, where he’ll also be having a “homecoming” of sorts in front of his home fans. Let’s not forget Bagnaia won his first race in Spain before the France crash, so he was starting to build momentum on the grid before the mishap.
Bagnaia is currently seventh in the championship standings — behind three Ducati teammates (in order; Bastianini, Jack Miller, and Zarco). It’s a rather disappointing finish, but that likely just makes him an “under the radar” play at Mugello. That’s a perfect compliment to Bastianini, who will have less rich odds.
Ironically, both Ducati teammates have exchanged words in the media recently about who’ll sit next to Bagnaia on Ducati’s factory team come 2023. More than anything else, it sounds like a “friendly rivalry” to us, and that’s not bad for competition, hence our dual bets on them.
