The final race of the 2024 MotoGP season is upon us. That race, the Motul Solidarity Grand Prix of Barcelona, takes place on Sunday, November 17, at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Montmelo, Spain. This race could decide the 2024 MotoGP world champion. Heading into the Barcelona GP, last year’s world championship runner-up, Jorge Martin, has a 24-point lead over two-time defending champion Francesco Bagnaia. The riders have competed on this circuit once this year at the 2024 Catalan motorcycle Grand Prix. Bagnaia won that race but failed to complete the MotoGP Sprint. Martin finished in second place during the race and placed fourth in the Sprint. Martin earned 26 points for the weekend, while Bagnaia had 25.

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is a 4.66 km long course with eight right corners and six lefts. All of the official records on the circuit were set earlier this year. Aleix Espargaro holds the all-time lap record at 1:38:190, which is also the best pole time. The best race lap is Pedro Acosta’s 1:39:664, and Franco Morbidelli holds the top speed record at 356.4 km per hour.

Francesco Bagnaia

Francesco Bagnaia is in an unfamiliar spot heading into the last race of the 2024 MotoGP season. The 27-year-old is the two-time defending MotoGP world champion, and while he is in the hunt for a third consecutive title, the Ducati Lenovo Team rider is in second place heading into the Barcelona GP and he needs to pick up a win if he hopes to repeat as world champion. Bagnaia trails last year’s runner-up, Jorge Martin, by 24 points heading into Barcelona.

Bagnaia has raced well over his past five starts, picking up three wins and two third places. However, in his three races before that stretch, Bagnaia failed to finish twice and had a ninth-place finish. No rider has as many wins as Bagnaia in 2024. He has 10 victories in 19 starts. Last year Bagnaia had seven wins, finishing the year with 467 points, while Martin placed second with 428.

Bagnaia has five MotoGP starts on this circuit. He won in 2024 and placed sixth and seventh in the other races he finished. Bagnaia did not finish on the circuit in 2019 and 2022. He did not start in 2023.

Expect Bagnaia to be incredibly aggressive on Sunday, hoping to win his third world championship.

Jorge Martin

All eyes will be on the 26-year-old Jorge Martin heading into the Barcelona GP. The Prima Pramac Racing rider finished in ninth place at the end of the year in his first two MotoGP seasons. Last year he was the runner-up. Martin has been at or near the top of the standings for most of the 2024 season, and while he is in first place right now, Martin is feeling pressure from Bagnaia, who is not too far behind him in the points standings. Martin cannot afford to play it too safe in Barcelona. He does not necessarily need a win to become the 2024 world champ, but he can’t be lackadaisical with Bagnaia so close to him in points.

Martin has been excellent down the stretch. While he only has one victory in the past six races, Martin has finished second in the five other races. Martin has started 19 races this year. He has not finished two of those races and placed 15th once. In every other race Martin has started, he has placed inside the top four, with most of those finishes (10) being in second place. He has three wins this year, with his most recent victory coming in late September when he placed first in Indonesia.

Marc Marquez

After a few injury-plagued seasons, Marc Marquez has bounced back in a big way in 2024. The 31-year-old six-time MotoGP world champ is in third place heading into the final race of the year. Marquez has started every race this year and only has not finished twice. Last year, Marquez started 15 races and failed to complete six of those competitions. Marquez is racing for Gresini Racing this year, but he will join Bagnaia on the factory Ducati team next season. The veteran rider has put any notions that is past his prime well behind him with his performance this year. Look for Marquez to attempt to finish the year with his first victory since he won in Australia in October. Marquez has three wins this year.

Marquez placed third on this circuit earlier in the year.

Best bet to win the 2024 Barcelona GP

While Bagnaia won on this circuit earlier in the year, he does not present much betting value heading into Sunday’s race. He’s also a risky pick because he needs to throw caution to the wind in order to win the 2024 MotoGP world championship. There is better value in picking Jorge Martin to win.

The betting pick is Jorge Martin to win the 2024 Barcelona Grand Prix.
