2022 San Marino GP Preview

The 2022 MotoGP season has become the Francesco Bagnaia and Fabio Quartararo show — and we’d expect the same to transpire next time out. But before we preview the 2022 San Marino GP, let’s quickly recap the most recent race in Austria. The aforementioned drivers finished first and second with the edge going to Bagnaia.

Ducati has long dominated Red Bull Ring — the site of the Austrian GP. Last weekend was par for the course with Bagnaia and teammates (Enea Bastianini, Jack Miller, and Jorge Martin) leading the way early on. Bastianini wound up retiring early and Miller surrendered a late advantage to Quartararo, who worked his way up right behind Bagnaia.

For Bagnaia, this is now three consecutive wins on the grid and five overall — most among all drivers. You’d think with that performance he’d be right behind Quartararo in the world title standings, but he’s actually not. Heck, he’s not even in second-place. Quartararo’s 200 points are 32 better than Aleix Espargaro. Then there’s Bagnaia at 156 points, which is 44 behind the leader. Multiple DNFs have hurt Bagnaia badly this season.

One more major takeaway from Austria is that Joan Mir was injured. The 2020 world champion suffered a scary crash in lap one of the race. Early indications are that the Spaniard suffered a small fracture in the talus bone of his right ankle. Therefore, Mir will sit out the San Marino GP. It’s another bad turn for Mir’s disappointing season that includes zero podium finishes. Danilo Petrucci is being considered by Suzuki to replace the ex-champion.

The Misano Circuit has been an annual fixture in the MotoGP schedule since 2007. Bagnaia won the 2021 outing, barely beating Quartararo by less than half-a-second. All signs point toward the two going at it once more this season.

Betting Picks To Win 2022 San Marino GP

We know there’s bettors with different appetites for risk and generally speaking, most fall into one of two categories. Either you’re a “safe” bettor or a risky one with very little inbetween. That’s why we’ve made two different picks to win the 2022 San Marino GP — one that appeals to each category. Here’s who we got:

Safe Bet — Francesco Bagnaia

No one and we mean no one should understate how difficult it is to pull off three straight wins. In MotoGP history, it’s only been accomplished by six different riders — a list that now includes Bagnaia. The others? All-timers like Valentino Rossi, Casey Stoner, Dani Pedrosa, Jorge Lorenzo, and Marc Marquez. The incredibly run has cut his title deficit from 91 points to 44 now.

We’re “riding the hot hand” so to speak and wagering on Bagnaia to pull off a fourth consecutive win — in his own backyard of Misano too. He already won the Italian Grand Prix earlier this season so what’s one more home win? Expect a partisan crowd lift for Bagnaia come race-time.

Risky Bet — Andrea Dovizioso

The biggest story of Misano will undoubtedly be Dovizioso. It’s not only the Italian’s home race too (he is from Forlì, about 70 kilometers away), but it will be his last in MotoGP. He announced it a few weeks ago. Yamaha is replacing him with test rider Cal Crutchlow the rest of the season.

Dovizioso and Yamaha’s problems are an open secret — hence why he’s retiring in the middle of the season and not the end of it. But let’s not completely discredit the 36-year-old driver either. Over his MotoGP career, he’s tallied 15 wins and another 62 podiums. He also notched a 125cc title in 2004.

Could there be a storybook-ending for Dovizioso at Misano? Welp, it’s not out of the realm of possibility. He did win here in 2018, after all. Throwing a wager on Dovizioso — especially at these longshot odds — might just be worthwhile fairytale magic ensues.
