Here. We. Go. Races at “The Cathedral” aka the TT Circuit Assen in the Netherlands are always a little extra special — and that remains the case in 2022. Here’s a complete preview of the Dutch Grand Prix on June 26, plus our best bets to win the race.

2022 Dutch Grand Prix Preview
Any preview of the 2022 Dutch Grand Prix has to start with Fabio Quartararo. It should come as no surprise the Frenchman is the current betting favorite to win the Dutch Tourist Trophy across top-rated MotoGP betting sites. He’s the reigning champion, having taken the 2021 event. However, history isn’t exactly on Quartararo’s side. No rider has won back-to-back Dutch titles since Valentino Rossi in 2005 — almost two decades ago.
Not only that, but Quartararo is beginning to run away with the 2022 world championship. He’s won two consecutive races — first at Catalan and then in Germany — which gives him 172 points on the season. That’s 34 more than runner-up Aleix Espargaró. After that, there’s a huge gap down with Johann Zarco’s 111 points all the way in third.
History means something extra at Assen since it’s the oldest MotoGP event on the annual calendar. A world championship race has been held here every year since 1949 sans 2020 due to the global pandemic. Among active drivers, Marc Marquez has the most career success at the vaunted track. The Spaniard has five victories at Assen. However, he will not be on the grid come Sunday. He’s still recovering from a fourth injury to his arm.
TT Assen is the second-to-last race before the summer break. It’ll be followed by the Grand Prix of Finland on July 10 before an entire month off. So keep that in mind if you’re betting because opportunities to make money off the sport will soon run dry temporarily.

Fabio Quartararo
Yes, betting the overwhelming favorite isn’t a “sexy” choice, but it’s the smart choice here. We’ve already said how well things are going for Quartararo — two straight wins, another victory here last year — but the Yamaha rider is as much our pick because there’s no one else worth taking seriously in this spot. We mean, if not Quartararo, then who else is there to bet on?
Espargaro has almost no “killer instinct” to win despite always being in contention. Zarco has zero wins this year, and so do Brad Binder and Jack Miller. Enea Bastianini is wildly inconsistent. It’s honestly slim pickings which means Quartararo might become automatic betting material the rest of the season.
Francesco Bagnaia
Admittedly, Bagnaia is a boom-or-bust bet. Amazingly, in the past five races, he’s either claimed a victory or DNF — no inbetween the two extremes. But the bad extreme is what’s currently trending and that’s back-to-back retirements. This bad luck can’t possibly keep up for Bagnaia, right? Right?!
We’re betting it doesn’t. Part of that is because Assen is a special course for the Italian rider. His first career win — in Moto3 back in 2016 — was here, which led Bagnaia to tattooing the track layout on his right arm. Seriously. He also won there in Moto2 but has yet to do so at the MotoGP level. It’s clear Bagnaia knows the ins and outs of the Cathedral and with DNF desperation seeking in, that combo could catapult him back into the victory spot.
