Rain, Rivals and Redemption: Previewing the MotoGP Brazilian Grand Prix

MotoGP returns to Brazil this weekend for the first time since 2004. No current rider has any MotoGP data from this venue. Riders will complete 31 laps, the most since Laguna Seca in 2013. The race takes place at the Autodromo Internacional Aryton Senna in Goiânia. The 3.835 km circuit features 15 corners, ten rights and five lefts.

In addition to this being the first race for these riders at this track, the weather reports are not doing them any favors. Heavy rain flooded parts of the circuit earlier this week. Rookie Diogo Moreira races on home soil as Brazil’s first MotoGP rider in decades. Let’s discuss the favorites and dark horses.

Pedro Acosta leads the championship after strong spring and race results in Thailand. Marco Bezzecchi dominated the Thai GP for Aprilia, trailing Acosta by just seven points. Raul Fernandez sits third after two podium finishes at the opener. Defending champion Marc Marquez arrives 23 points behind after a tire failure in Buriram.

The right-heavy layout could be a disadvantage for Marquez, who typically excels on left-turning circuits. This could be the perfect chance for some unexpected riders to shine. Toprak Razgatlioglu could benefit from a level playing field. Francesco Bagnaia is also one to keep your eye on at this new track.

Marco Bezzecchi

No rider has dominated the track like Bezzecchi has in the past three races. He’s won every race and only a sprint race crash at Buriram kept him from a clean sweep. He sits just seven points behind championship leader Pedro Acosta. Oddsmakers are favoring him to keep this win streak going.

A large part of the reason for Bezzecchi’s success is that the new Aprilia RS-GP26 was the best bike on the grid in Thailand. All four Aprilia-powered bikes performed well at the opener. Raul Fernandez on the satellite Trackhouse Aprilia took third, and Jorge Martin finished fourth.

Will Bezzecchi be able to adapt quicker than the rest of the grid to this new track? I think he stays hot and will take him at +150.

Marc Marquez

Marquez broke his right shoulder in a collision with Bezzecchi at last year’s Indonesian GP. He missed the final four rounds of the 2025 season after undergoing surgery. A rear rim failure in Thailand kept him out of what looked like a sure podium finish. Unfortunately, Goiânia’s layout might be just about the worst place he could’ve picked for a comeback.

Nine of the track’s 14 corners are right-handers, many of them consecutive. Marquez has historically struggled in right-hand turns since his 2020 Jerez crash. A shoulder that is not fully healed only compounds that weakness. That said, he was Ducati’s strongest rider all weekend by a clear margin. He was beaten to pole position by just .035 seconds.

This circuit doesn’t suit Marquez at all, and it seems to work against him, so I’ll pass on him winning this weekend.

Pedro Acosta

Pedro Acosta leads the standings after winning the sprint and finishing second in Thailand. He became the first KTM rider ever to lead the MotoGP World Championship. The 21-year-old Spainard holds a seven-point advantage over Bezzecchi. His sprint victory came after a fierce duel with Marc Marquez.

KTM’s aggressive winter development has transformed the RC16 from last year’s package. Acosta says the upgrades make the bike feel like it was built from scratch. Teammate Brad Binder added consistent top-seven results, showing the team’s strength. Acosta has never won a full MotoGP Grand Prix on Sunday; does that change this weekend in Brazil?

Francesco Bagnaia

Bagnaia had a rough 2025; he won only two races and dropped to fifth in the standings. The two-time champion says Ducati’s GP26 suits his riding style far better than last year’s machine. However, Thailand was a tough opener, with Bagnaia finishing ninth. He sits tenth in the standings with just eight points after round one.

Maybe a fresh track will help him get his right for the weekend. No rider has existing data to lean on in Goiânia. Bagnaia has acknowledged he still needs more consistency under braking. If he finds it quickly on Friday, a podium push is realistic.

I agree and believe a podium finish is possible, but I’d be surprised if Bagnaia actually won the race, so I’ll pass on him at +1200.
