2022 Indonesian Grand Prix Preview

As we said at the start, this event is a new addition to the MotoGP schedule. That’s not a small thing, which is why we’ll start our Indonesia Grand Prix preview there. MotoGP last raced in the country back in 1997. It’s been 25 long years since then, but the sport is finally back. The race will take place in the recently-opened Mandalika Circuit, which is all of fourth months old.

Typically, when there’s a first-time event, there are a lot of unknowns. For bettors, unknowns are typically not conducive to making accurate predictions. While some of those unknown exist with the Indonesia GP, there’s some level of familiarity too. That’s because MotoGP riders had a pre-test at this very track during February. The takeaway from that weekend? The Mandalika Circuit is fast. Really fast.

During pretests, Honda’s Pol Espargaro had the fastest time in the entire grid. His teammate Marc Marquez was also consistently atop the timesheets during the weekend. Though, we don’t want to read too much into pretests results. Rain dampened the track conditions plenty and it’s not like everyone was racing at 100 percent.

This next race will come on the heels of the Qatar Grand Prix, which kicked off the new season on March 6. Enea Bastianini edged out Brad Binder to take first place that day. Other notable finishers included Marquez (fifth), defending champion Fabio Quartararo (ninth), and DNFs for both Francesco Bagnaia and Jack Miller.

Betting Picks For 2022 Indonesian Grand Prix

Unlike F1 (which also starts this weekend), MotoGP is much more unpredictable. That’s why the aforementioned betting odds are rather scattered across the board. Take the previous winner, Bastianini, for example. His victory in Qatar was the first of his career at the MotoGP level. It’s this unpredictability that leads us to make multiple betting picks for the 2022 Indonesian GP. Here’s who we’re betting on:

Marquez Or Espargaro?

Honestly, either of the two Honda riders would be a smart bet here. Like we said before, both were high performers during pretests. The Honda bike, which was re-made for the 2022 season, should now be more comfortable for each rider too (a comfort that will build as the season wears on).

But if we had to make one pick to win, we’re choosing Espargaro over Marquez, despite the latter having the best betting odds and picks to win in Indonesia. The 30-year-old Espargaro has yet to win a MotoGP event in his career, but he was mightily close in Qatar. Espargaro was leading with four laps to go before being overtaken. Still, the momentum is there for the Spaniard and we like him to finally win the “big one” at this race.

Fabio Quartararo

Both us and Quartararo himself haven’t been shy about the lack of “fire” in Yamaha’s current bike. We’ve previously told you to fade the defending champion whilst betting (which we still largely believe), but not this time around. We actually think the Frenchman is being undervalued at only +750 to win.

Our concerns remain about the bike itself, but hey, let’s not forget about Quartararo’s performance here during pretests. After Espargaro, he finished with the second-best time all weekend-long. There’s reason to believe that early success could carry over into the actual race, hence why he’s drawing a wager from us. The Indonesian Grand Prix is one place you can remain confident in the current world champion.
