The next race of the MotoGP season isn’t until Sunday, August 8 — so we’re amidst a six-week layoff. Nonetheless, that doesn’t mean we can’t get ahead and make 2021 Styrian Grand Prix picks! And that’s exactly what we’re doing in this article!
Because of the long break, MotoGP odds are hard to find at the moment across online sportsbooks. Check back in a few weeks because we’ll have up-to-the-minute lines on who will win at Styrian:
It’s worth noting that we’re about halfway through the entire MotoGP schedule. The most recent competition, the Dutch Tourist Trophy, was the ninth of the year, which means 10 more remain on the calendar (with a few more possible add-ons if postponed races are rescheduled in time).
Thus far, Quartararo is cruising in the Rider’s standings. With a win last week at the Dutch TT, he’s now finished first on four different occasions (almost half of all races). Quartararo is up to 156 points — 34 more than the next best rider (Johann Zarco). It’s only right we start our Styrian Grand Prix picks with him:
Betting Pick — Fabio Quartararo
This one’s a no-brainer, isn’t it? Like we said before, Quartararo is blazing past the competition, and at this point, he should warrant a bet every single race (until he cools off if that ever happens).
Though, we’d be foolish not to point out that the Red Bull Ring — where this event will go down — hasn’t been the most kind to Quartararo during his career. Quartararo’s highest-ever finish at the track was third. Worse, a year ago, he placed eighth and 13th whilst racing here.
It’s this reason why we’re betting on two other riders, sans Quartararo. You should be doing this every time you bet on the race winner in case unpredictability strikes (spoiler alert: it usually does in motorsports), but more so in this case, since Quartararo isn’t exactly a runaway betting choice.
Betting Pick — Miguel Oliveira
Since we knocked Quartararo for his historical lack of success at the Red Bull Ring, it feels only right our next pick is someone that has won before at the course. That someone is the reigning champion, Oliveira.
The Portuguese won by a hair at the 2020 Styrian GP, just edging out foes like Pol Espargaro, Jack Miller, and Joan Mir. But even before then, Oliviera had a second-place finish on his record when he was in Moto2. His pedigree in Austria makes him a safe betting choice to go alongside Quartararo.
Betting Pick — Joan Mir
There’s only one rider competing at the Styrian GP that’s won at this very track multiple times before. That would be Mir, the reigning MotoGP Riders Champion. He claimed back-to-back victories in 2016 and 2017 in Moto3.
The only other present-day driver that can match Mir’s success at the Red Bull Ring is Andrea Dovizioso, who has three outright victories there. Of course, the Italian is currently out of the MotoGP picture so Mir takes the cake in terms of experience across the circuit.
Three separate bets on Quartararo, Oliveira, and Mir make a whole lot of sense. Between the trio, you’re covering your bases in terms of recent racing success and historical success.
