NASCAR Austin Top Picks – Elliott And The road?

One of the more fun aspects about the NASCAR EchoPark Texas Grand Prix from Austin is this. Hey, there is a road course for the first time this season. Does Hendrick Motor Sports and “road warrior” Chase Elliott somehow winning yet again for Sunday?

The Austin event has Saturday practice and qualifying once again. Unlike last week in Atlanta, it appears there will be a full round of practice and normal qualifying. With the “Next-Gen” car, does that impact Elliott much in any way? On the surface, that answer would seem to be no.

The Next-Gen car has not been too much of a problem for Chase Elliott. Though he has not won a race in 2022, Elliott does lead in points after yet another top-ten finish. On road courses, the No. 9 car has won seven times. Just think, the driver is not even 26 yet. Last year, Elliott benefitted from pit stops and heavy rain to win a rain-shortened version of the race. Only 54 of the scheduled 68 laps were completed. That does not expect to happen this year.

The Elliott as a favorite is a first this 2022 season for the EchoPark Texas Grand Prix. Again, watching a video of the first previous races in 2022 revealed some things. When one adds in previous NASCAR Austin and road races, no wonder why Elliott fires in at +300 on MyBookie. However, it is Kyle Busch at +1100 and AJ Allmendinger at +2000 that could as good a shot. Right now, Elliott remains the top pick. In his previous road races, he has won 35% of them. He will contend but can he win Sunday?

NASCAR Austin – Say Hello Ross Chastain?

So, this is the spot where we’re making 2022 NASCAR Longer Shot picks for Austin. Why? That is simple. Always bet very modest when making other bets such as futures. One of the best wagers may just be on Ross Chastain for Austin.

After all, early numbers presume Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson to be superior on this road course. While that may be true, last year most forget that Chastain arguably was even faster. The Trackhouse Racing driver has had one of the strongest cars this season and was setting all sorts of fast laps on the rain soaked Austin course last year. Chastain finished fourth last year when the race was called but was charging up the standings. Again, expect a full 68 laps this time around.

Chastain finished third at Las Vegas. Last week, he cut a tire at Atlanta then went two laps down. Amazingly, he roared back to lead 42 laps and finish in second. The driver ran out of time trying to pass William Byron on the last lap.

Again, it is clear that Ross Chastain is signaling a turn towards even more youth dominating the sport. Now, the question is can Chastain get that elusive first win at the top level? It will not be easy with road experts like Kyle Busch, Joey Logano, and even AJ Allmendinger. However, those early numbers are very attractive for Chastain to be a top pick.

2022 NASCAR Austin Outlook

With what occurred at Atlanta, NASCAR Austin shapes up to be quite a spectacle . The 68 lap race goes 233 miles. The Austin track should be much dryer than last year. One key will be to watch for the paint and the bumps. The latter may be more intriguing with dry conditions expected.

Some notables like Kyle Busch (+1100) and Joey Logano (+2000) should see their fortunes boosted this week. Both Kyle Busch and Joey Logano finished in the top five at Austin last year and do excel at road courses.

This race expects to see the usual suspects qualify well along with AJ Allmendinger. Allmendinger won the road course at Indianapolis last year and was fifth last year at Austin when the race was stopped. The “road course guru” could qualify near the pole position on Saturday. That would set him up well to contend for this race as it has a “front-runner” quality to it.

Looking toward previous practice, testing, and qualifying cannot hurt this week. The results may just shock you. With Busch and Logano a little further up the ladder, Allmendinger is intriguing enough in this spot for NASCAR Austin this Sunday.

Who Could Be Worth A Long Shot Wager At NASCAR Austin?

Yes, there may be a few very long shots to take a look at for this NASCAR Austin race. For example, Chris Buescher comes in as long as +6600 on some books. Then, there are drivers like Tyler Reddick who come in at +2200. Reddick’s speed is well known this year but the question will be can he control that Chevy?

Is this the week for Reddick to surprise and take home the checkered flag? This is worth a fractional unit wager.
