The Austin event has Saturday practice and qualifying once again. Unlike last week in Atlanta, it appears there will be a full round of practice and normal qualifying. With the “Next-Gen” car, does that impact Elliott much in any way? On the surface, that answer would seem to be no.

The Next-Gen car has not been too much of a problem for Chase Elliott. Though he has not won a race in 2022, Elliott does lead in points after yet another top-ten finish. On road courses, the No. 9 car has won seven times. Just think, the driver is not even 26 yet. Last year, Elliott benefitted from pit stops and heavy rain to win a rain-shortened version of the race. Only 54 of the scheduled 68 laps were completed. That does not expect to happen this year.
The Elliott as a favorite is a first this 2022 season for the EchoPark Texas Grand Prix. Again, watching a video of the first previous races in 2022 revealed some things. When one adds in previous NASCAR Austin and road races, no wonder why Elliott fires in at +300 on MyBookie. However, it is Kyle Busch at +1100 and AJ Allmendinger at +2000 that could as good a shot. Again, it is clear that Ross Chastain is signaling a turn towards even more youth dominating the sport. Now, the question is can Chastain get that elusive first win at the top level? It will not be easy with road experts like Kyle Busch, Joey Logano, and even AJ Allmendinger. However, those early numbers are very attractive for Chastain to be a top pick.
2022 NASCAR Austin Outlook
With what occurred at Atlanta, NASCAR Austin shapes up to be quite a spectacle . The 68 lap race goes 233 miles. The Austin track should be much dryer than last year. One key will be to watch for the paint and the bumps. The latter may be more intriguing with dry conditions expected.
Some notables like Kyle Busch (+1100) and Joey Logano (+2000) should see their fortunes boosted this week. Both Kyle Busch and Joey Logano finished in the top five at Austin last year and do excel at road courses.
This race expects to see the usual suspects qualify well along with AJ Allmendinger. Allmendinger won the road course at Indianapolis last year and was fifth last year at Austin when the race was stopped. The “road course guru” could qualify near the pole position on Saturday.
