NASCAR Richmond Best Bets – Elliott The Short?
So, the NASCAR Toyota Owners 400 from Richmond is on one of the classic 3/4 mile short-tracks. Hey, the 14-degree turns are quite a fun ride with an 8-degree front-stretch. The question is can Chase Elliott build off his result last week and win this week?
The Richmond event has Saturday practice and qualifying as has been the usual this 2022 season. Expect another chaotic sort of practice and qualifying. By now, the drivers should be more ready.

The Next-Gen car and Chase Elliott have been a pretty good match so far. Though he still has not won a race in 2022, Elliott does lead in points after yet another top-ten finish. The No. 9 car has a couple of top-five results in his last five tries at Richmond. Just think, the Hendrick Motorsports Racing cars have been quite fast early and later in races this year. Look at Austin, Elliott and Alex Bowman were right there at the end of the race. Bowman even had a shot to win.
Elliott is a favorite a second consecutive week. This may seem unexpected at Richmond but Elliott does have a few results from his Xfinity days even. The early numbers have spread out the money err wagering a little. With Elliott in the +800 to +900 range, that means several other drivers are close by. Again, the “leveling of the field” of sorts makes the driver a little more attractive than usual on the D-shaped short-track.
NASCAR Richmond – Ross Chastain On Roll
So, this is the spot where we’re gush about Ross Chastain. Why? That is simple. Always bet very modest when making other future bets. It could be worth it to look at Ross Chastain for Richmond.
After all, early numbers were not the greatest for Chastain. However, since his issues at Fontana, the Trackhouse Racing driver has parlayed his speed and daring driving into a much better position for the “playoff chase”. That’s right. Ross Chastain and his #1 Chevy will not be a long-shot anymore. This is after he won at the Circuit of the Americas last week. Now, that vaulted Chastain to fifth in the points standings. More importantly, that likely put him into the “playoff chase”.
Heading into NASCAR Richmond, Chastain has finished third, second, second, and first in the past four weeks. No one knows how long this kind of streak will continue. But, this has a bit of a Kyle Larson feel from last year. At the very least, the younger drivers have served notice.

Over and over, it is clear that Ross Chastain is cementing the notion that the youth are here. They are not going away. Look at Daniel Suarez, his teammate. Suarez’s car is just as fast and with a little luck, he will be contending soon enough as well. This Next-Gen car keeps producing what it set out to do. Yes, incidents are up but the quality of racing has never been better. It is why drivers like Chastain have a leg up so far this 2022 season.
2022 NASCAR Richmond Outlook
With what occurred at Atlanta and then Austin, NASCAR Richmond is going to be fast and quick . The 400 lap race goes 300 miles. The Richmond track expects to be drier and a bit cooler than last year. One key will be to watch for the paint and the bumps. The latter may be more intriguing with dry conditions expected.
Some notables like Kyle Busch (+900) and Denny Hamlin (+1100) should see their fortunes boosted this week. Both Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin excel in different ways at Richmond. Hamlin has four top-five results and the younger Busch is 5-for-5 in top-ten results. The real question mark may just be Martin Truex Jr.
This race will be a fascinating battle to see how JGR fares. Let’s put it this way. Martin Truex Jr. has won three of the past five races at Richmond since 2019. He is the lone driver to finish in the top-five during every single one of those races. Truex Jr. drove a race track like this in New Jersey for as long as he could remember. It is that experience which fuels the #19’s hopes this week.
One impressive thing about Martin Truex Jr.'s win last fall at Richmond ….

Looking toward previous practice, testing, and qualifying cannot hurt this week. The results could be a harbinger of things to come. With Busch and Hamlin a little more in most bettors’ minds, Truex Jr. is at least in a decent spot for NASCAR Richmond this Sunday.
Who Could Be Worth A Long Shot Wager At NASCAR Austin?
Yes, there may be a few very long shots to take a look at for this NASCAR Richmond race. For example, Daniel Suarez comes in as long as +2700 on some books. Then, there are drivers like Aric Almirola at +3000. Even Austin Dillon at +4200 is a possibility.
Is this the week for someone like Almirola to pull off a shocker? This is worth a fractional unit wager.
