Philadelphia 76ers breakdown and analysis

The Philadelphia 76ers are one game away from a first-round sweep against the Toronto Raptors in their first-round playoff series. Philadelphia won Game 3 when Joel Embiid hit a buzzer beater 3-pointer in overtime in Toronto on Weds.

Embiid leads the 76ers in playoff scoring with 27.7 points per game. Embiid’s playoff scoring is not a surprise. He was the top scorer in the NBA in the regular season. What has been a bit of a surprise for Philadelphia is the play of Tyrese Maxey, who has averaged 26.7 points per game in the playoffs for the 76ers.

The 21-year-old Maxey averaged 17.5 points per game during the 2021-22 regular season. He has upped that average considerably in the playoffs. Maxey scored 38 in Game 1, 23 in Game 2 and 19 in Game 3 of the Raptors series.

In addition to the team leaders, two of the 76ers other starters, Tobias Harris and James Harden have averaged close to 20 points per game so far in the series. Harris has 19 and Harden 18.3. Harden also leads the team in assists with 10 per game and steals with 1.3 per game. Harris is the team’s top blocker with 1.7. Meanwhile Embiid leads the 76ers in rebounds with 13.

Toronto Raptors breakdown and analysis

The Toronto Raptors played their best game of their series against the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday. The Raptors held the lead throughout regulation, but allowed the 76ers to tie the game and then take the win in overtime.

The Raptors were without rookie Scottie Barnes for the seconds game in a row. Barnes has a sprained left ankle and he is questionable for Game 4. The team could use his help. Barnes had 15 points on 32 minutes of play in Game 1. The 20-year-old averaged 15.3 points per game during the regular season.

OG Anunoby scored 26 points, Gary Trent Jr. contributed 24, and Precious Achiuwa had 20 for the Raptors in Game 3.

Fred VanVleet said of the Raptors effort on Wednesday, ““We did a lot of good things tonight, we played a lot of minutes of great basketball and we’re going to have to do it again.”

2021-22 NBA season series

The Raptors and 76ers played four times during the 2021-22 NBA season. The Raptors won three of those games (119-114, 93-88 and 115-109). Two of those wins were in Philly and one was at home. The 76ers one win in the season series was their 114-109 victory on Toronto in December.

Our pick

The 76ers have the momentum and are looking for a sweep in the first round. The Raptors played well in Game 3 and know they were very close to winning that game. I think both teams will play inspired basketball on Saturday, but I expect the 76ers to finish the series with a win in Toronto.
