The 2022 NBA draft took place in early July. With the first pick of the entry draft, the Orlando Magic selected Paolo Banchero from Duke. Following that pick, the Oklahoma Thunder went with Chet Holmgren and the Houston Rockets selected Jabari Smith. Banchero, Holmgren and Smith were the three favorites to go at the top of the draft. With the selections out of the way, the eyes of NBA fans can turn to who will end up as the NBA Rookie of the Year for the upcoming 2022-23 NBA season.
The Rookie of the Year for 2022 was Scottie Barnes of the Toronto Raptors. Barnes won the award with 378 points (48 first-place votes) from the voting panel. Evan Mobley of the Cleveland Cavaliers finished in second place with 363 points (43 first-place votes). Barnes averaged 15.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.08 steals and 0.74 blocks in 35.4 minutes on average. The Toronto rookie led NBA first-year players in minutes. Paolo Banchero – Orlando Magic
Paolo Banchero was earmarked as the most complete college player in the 2022 NBA Draft. His size and strength made him NBA ready after just one season at Duke. During that year, he averaged 17.2 points per game to go along with a .478 field-goal percentage and a .338 three-point percentage. Banchero was the ACC Rookie of the Year.
Further proof that Banchero is NBA ready came during the NBA Summer League. The Magic saw enough of Banchero in the two games he played that the team decided to rest him and allow some of the more unheralded players on the Orlando roster to get time on the court.
Chet Holmgren – Oklahoma Thunder
The big concern for Chet Holmgren is his size. He is seven feet tall, but weighs under 200 pounds and it doesn’t appear that he will put much more size on his frame before the start of the season. Oklahoma got some good news during Holmgren’s Summer League performance where he averaged 14 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 2.8 blocks. Holmgren also showed strong passing instincts and his defense lived up to the billing from his year at Gonzaga.
The one thing that Holmgren will need to answer is if he will hold up top the rigors of a full season of NBA play, but the signs ahead of the 2022-23 NBA season were positive for the Thunder’s big man.
Keegan Murray – Sacramento Kings
The Sacramento Kings took Keegan Murray with the fourth pick in the 2022 NBA entry draft. Murray had two years of play at Iowa under his belt before the Kings drafted him. He was a First Team All-Big Ten player in 2022 and won the Karl Malone Award as the nation’s top power forward.
Murray did not disappoint in the NBA Summer League. He was the Summer League MVP. He averaged 23 points, seven rebounds, two assists and one steal. His shooting percentage from the field was 50 percent and he connected on 40 percent of his three-point shots. Murray was also named to the All-NBA Summer League First Team.
The Orlando Magic are going to give Paulo Banchero every opportunity to succeed in his rookie season. The Magic’s offense is likely to focus mainly on Banchero. He is going to log plenty of minutes and get a lot of opportunities to score.
Pick: Paulo Banchero to win NBA Rookie of the Year in 2022-23.
