Miami Heat breakdown and analysis

Jimmy Butler went off for the Miami Heat in Game 2 of the team’s first-round playoff series against the Atlanta Hawks. Butler led the team in scoring during the regular season in 2021-22 with 21.4 points per game. In Game 1 against the Hawks, Butler had 21 points. In Game 2, the 32-year-old more than doubled that total with a career playoff best 45 points. One reason for the increased total was Butler shot 4-for-7 from 3-point range. Butler went 15-for-25 from the field, 11-for-12 from the foul line and had no turnover and no fouls on 39 minutes of play.

After Game 2, Butler said that the addition of Kyle Lowry to the team helped him a great deal. With Lowry as a point guard, Butler said he has been able to concentrate on shooting the ball more. Lowry has averaged 9.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists and one steal on 33 minutes of play in the first two games of the playoffs.

Atlanta Hawks breakdown and analysis

The Miami Heat blew out the Atlanta Hawks in Game 1 of their playoff series. Atlanta lost by fewer points in Game 2, but they still lost. The Hawks look to get a home win on Friday when the series shifts to Atlanta.

The Hawks will go the way their star player, Trae Young goes. Young scored a season-low eight points in the team’s crushing loss in Game 1. He delivered 25 points in Game 2, but that was still lower than his regular season total of 28.4 points per game.

Young needs to contribute more for the Hawks to have success. Bogdan Bogdanovic is the team’s No. 2 playoff scorer. His 17.5 average points in the first two games of the Miami series is an improvement on his 15.1 points per game in the regular season.

2021-22 NBA season series

The Miami Heat and Atlanta Hawks played four times during the 2021-22 NBA regular season. The Heat won three of those games (113-109, 124-118, 115-91). Atlanta’s sole win came during a home game, when they triumphed 110-108.

Our Pick

Jimmy Butler’s confidence is going to be soaring heading into Game 3 of this series. The Hawks have to find a way to shut him down and keep him as close to the 20 point threshold as possible if they want to have a chance to win. In addition to keeping Butler off the scoreboard, Trae Young is going to need to score more. Atlanta needs to do both these things if they want to get a win in this series. That’s a big ask.

Pick: Miami to beat Atlanta.
