Dallas’ title odds skyrocket

Now sitting at +1000, Dallas’ title odds shortened dramatically following its acquisition of Kyrie Irving. The eight-time All-Star is averaging 27.1 points, 5.3 assists and 5.1 rebounds in 40 games this season. He provides an incredible secondary scoring option next to Luka Doncic, who is tied for the league lead in scoring with 33.4 points per game.

The Mavericks scored at a NBA-best rate with their Slovenian superstar on the floor (118.7 points per 100 possessions). However, their offense tanked to a league-worst rate (106.8) with Luka on the bench. While Irving’s arrival will help that, the team’s 24th ranked defense may be even worse. Dorian Finney-Smith was sent to the Nets in the Kyrie trade and he was arguably the Mavs’ best defender.

Will Kyrie behave?

Mavericks coach Jason Kidd reportedly pushed for the trade. The Hall of Fame point guard was Kyrie’s favorite player growing up and the two share a personal trainer. As a former longtime Nike executive, Dallas’ general manager Nico Harrison also maintains a strong relationship with Irving.

Still, crazy is crazy. Wasn’t Irving supposed to be best friends with Kevin Durant a couple years back? That certainly didn’t stop Kyrie from taking several leaves of absences from the Nets, refusing to get vaccinated, and posting anti-semitic tropes on social media.

Los Angeles vs Dallas

Los Angeles will likely open as a slight home favorite over the Mavericks on Wednesday night. The Clippers have two more wins than Dallas, which is 29-26 and fifth in the West. In a scheduling quirk, Tyronn Lue’s team will be the first to play Kyrie Irving’s new club only a few days after taking advantage of the shorthanded Nets.

Kawhi Leonard (24 PTS, 6 AST, 4 REB) and Paul George (29 PTs, 4 REB, 3 AST) led their team to 124-116 victory over Brooklyn on Monday. After picking up three victories on their four-game road trip, the Clip have now won eight of 10 games. While LAC has a mediocre 14-11 record at Crypto.com Arena, Dallas is even worse on the road with a 10-17 mark.

Best Bets

The stars will be out in Los Angeles for Kyrie Irving’s Mavericks debut. However, the 30-year-old might look out of place in Jason Kidd’s offense after only practicing for the first time on Tuesday.

Considering Dallas’ atrocious road record, we like the Clippers to get the job done at home on Wednesday night.
