As the first round of the Western Conference playoffs continues on Tuesday night, check out our predictions for the Timberwolves vs. Lakers matchup.
Minnesota (50-33 SU, 40-42-1 ATS) secured a decisive 117-95 victory over Los Angeles (50-33 SU, 45-36-2 ATS) as +4.5 underdogs in game one.
The T’Wolves showcased their momentum after winning eight of their last ten games. They started slowly, trailing by seven after the first quarter, but rallied with a strong second quarter, scoring 38 points and leading by 21 at halftime.
They finished with 21 three-pointers and shot 54.2% excelling in transition and limiting turnovers.

Game Preview (Timberwolves vs. Lakers)
In contrast, the Lakers began well, but quickly fell apart, finishing the game shooting just 39.8% after a promising start.
Spread | |||
Minnesota T'Wolves +5.5 Points | -112 | -110 | -105 |
LA Lakers -5.5 Points | -108 | -110 | -115 |
They struggled with rebounds, were outmatched in turnovers, and allowed the Timberwolves to score points off their mistakes.
During the regular season, Minnesota averaged 114.3 points per game, ranking 14th, while the Lakers managed 113.4 points, placing 19th. Both teams exhibited defensive weaknesses, with Minnesota allowing 109.3 points and Los Angeles giving up 112.2.
It’s hard to imagine that Los Angeles is on the verge of losing two consecutive home games to start a playoff series, yet that’s exactly what seems likely to happen.
The Timberwolves boast a younger, more athletic roster that has arguably gained an advantage from their playoff run to the Western Conference Finals last season.
Meanwhile, the Lakers appeared to show their age and some rust after a week off. They struggled in the paint and during transition plays, ultimately having no solution for the Timberwolves after the first quarter.
The Lakers’ lack of size and powerful presence inside was evident in the series opener, and their shallow bench also became apparent.

LeBron can’t shoulder the load alone any longer, and Luka’s contributions aren’t sufficient on their own in this situation. Minnesota has gone 3-1 both straight up and against the spread in their last four encounters with Los Angeles.
I would take the Timberwolves to cover in this one, while I think the Lakers win, it will be a close one.

Total Points
Let’s discuss the total points market in this one.
Total Points | |||
Over 210.5 | -110 | -110 | -110 |
Under 210.5 | -110 | -110 | -110 |
In their first matchup, the two teams combined for 212 points, hitting the under against a total of 215.
The Timberwolves started off slow, struggling with their shooting before finding their rhythm, whereas the Lakers began strong only to quickly fall off.

L.A. significantly lacked bench production, managing just 13 points from its reserves. With Minnesota’s defense set to contain either LeBron or Luka, the Lakers’ scoring options appear limited.
Notably, they’ve recorded 112 points or fewer in three of their past four games.
For Los Angeles to secure a victory, they must focus on tightening their defense, aiming to disrupt what Minnesota does best. Historically, the under has hit 7 out of the last 10 matchups between these teams.
These teams will continue to get more familiar with one another. I would look to taking the under in this one as I’m expecting the defense to shine in this second game.
Under 210.5 Points at -110 odds is the best bet in this one.
