The 2022 NBA Playoff Series between the Dallas Mavericks and the Utah Jazz began on Saturday in Dallas. The visiting team earned the win in Game 1, but the Mavericks evened the series on Monday in Game 2. The Mavericks are the No. 4 team in the Western Conference. The Jazz are the No. 5 team in the West. On Thursday, the teams are in Salt Lake City for Game 3 of the series. The Jazz are a pretty solid favorite to win and go up 2-1 in this first-round of their Western Conference NBA playoff series.
The first two games of this series have been close with Utah winning Game 1, 99-93 and Dallas triumphing in Game 2, 110-104.
Mavericks vs. Jazz Game 3 odds
Dallas Mavericks breakdown and analysis
The Dallas Mavericks have been without their best player, Luka Doncic, for the first two games of their series against the Utah Jazz. Doncic has an injured calf. He is working out, but is doubtful for Game 3 of the series.
With Doncic out of action, the Maverick approached Game 2 with a different plan. Dallas opened things up on offense and looked to score from outside and they did that, with Jalen Brunson scoring 41 points on 42 minutes of play for Dallas. Brunson averaged 16.3 points for the team in the regular season.
I expect the Mavericks to look to exploit the defense of the Jazz in Game 3. The team hit 22 of 47 of its 3-point attempts in Game 2. Seventeen of the 3-point shots Dallas connected on were uncontested shots.
Utah Jazz breakdown and analysis
The Utah Jazz watched the Dallas Mavericks use the same game plan the Los Angeles Clippers used in last year’s playoffs to win Game 2 of their series. The problem facing the Jazz as Game 3 approaches is adjusting to the Mavericks opening up the court. Utah was unable to do that last season and the Clippers put up four straight wins on the Jazz.
Utah does not seem to be sweating things at this point, but if the Mavericks pick up a win in Game 3 by pouring in a lot of 3-pointers, things could get interesting on the Jazz side of the ball.
Donovan Mitchell had 32 points in Game 1 and 34 points in Game 2 for the Jazz. Bojan Bogdanovic is second in team playoff scoring with 26 and 25 points in the first two games of the series.
The thing to watch in Game 3 is if the Jazz can make the necessary defensive adjustments.
2021-22 NBA season series
The Dallas Mavericks and Utah Jazz played four times during the 2021-22 NBA regular season. The clubs split the games. The Jazz won their two home games (120-116, 114-109) and the Mavericks were victorious at home (111-103, 114-100).
With how things worked out in Game 2 and what happened in 2021, I am nervous about Utah’s ability to deal with Dallas shooting from the outside. The team is going to need to make a believe out of me. With that, I am going for the upset in Game 3.
Pick: Mavericks to beat Jazz.
