The Dallas Mavericks and Utah Jazz play in the first elimination game of their first-round NBA Western Conference Playoff Series on Thursday night in Salt Lake City. Dallas broke the 2-2 series deadlock on Monday with a 102-77 blowout win at home. The teams head back to Utah’s home arena for Thursday’s game. The Jazz is 1-1 at home during this year’s playoff series.
The odds favor the Mavericks to close out the series on the road, but the Jazz were winners in Game 4, defeating Dallas 100-99 in Utah.

Dallas Mavericks breakdown and analysis
The Dallas Mavericks were without their best player for the first three games of the series against the Utah Jazz. Without Luka Doncic in the lineup, the Mavs were up 2-1 on Utah. Doncic, who was out of the mix with a calf injury, returned to the court for Game 4. Despite Doncic putting up 30 points and 10 rebounds, the Jazz won that game when they scored five unanswered points in the last 31 seconds to win 100-99.
Game 5 was a different story. The Mavericks held the Jazz scoreless for six minutes in the second quarter and held a 52-36 lead at the half. The game ended with Dallas winning 102-77. Doncic played 33 minutes in the game and scored 33 points with 13 rebounds.
Jalen Brunson, who led the team in scoring with Doncic sidelined, put up 24 points. He is averaging 28.6 points for the Mavericks during the playoffs.
Utah Jazz breakdown and analysis
Donovan Mitchell led the Utah Jazz in scoring in the first three games of their series against the Mavericks. Mitchell put up 32, 34, and 32 points in those games. In Game 4, his production dipped to 23 points. In Game 5, Mitchell played a series low 32 minutes and had just nine points. He left the court with a left hamstring injury, and his availability for Game 6 is questionable.
The Jazz need Mitchell on the court. Outside of him, no player has averaged more than 20 points per game for the series — or during the regular season. Jordan Clarkson is second on the Utah club in postseason scoring with 18 points per game. Bojan Bogdanovic is right behind him with 17.8 points.

The Dallas Mavericks and Utah Jazz played four times during the 2021-22 NBA regular season. The clubs split the games. The Jazz won their two home games (120-116, 114-109) and the Mavericks were victorious at home (111-103, 114-100).

The momentum in this series shifted in a big way in Game 5 to the Dallas side of the ledger. If Mitchell is injured and out of the lineup or even in the lineup and playing hurt, the Jazz are in big trouble.
Dallas has not made it past the first round of the NBA Playoffs since the team won the NBA title in 2011. Look for the team to move to the second round of the NBA Western Conference Playoffs with a win over Utah on Thursday.
