The NBA’s best and worst teams
The Brooklyn Nets will need their Big Three of Kevin Durant, James Harden and Kyrie Irving to stay healthier than they did last season to exceed their league-high win total (55.5). The NBA Champion Milwaukee Bucks (54.5) had a lower regular season win percentage last year (.639) than they did in 2019-20 (.767) or 2018-19 (.732), so it will be interesting to see if Giannis and company lay off the accelerator this season after a grueling playoff run.
The Lakers have a 52.5 win total – which LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook might be motivated to exceed after Los Angeles’ veteran acquisitions were mercilessly mocked on Twitter. Last year’s top regular-season team, the Utah Jazz (51.5), notched 52 victories in a 72-game season in 2020-21 and will play 10 more games this year.

Up next are the Phoenix Suns and Philadelphia 76ers at 51.5 wins. Both clubs will easily surpass that total if they rack up Ws at last year’s pace, but Chris Paul is a year older and Ben Simmons is reportedly on the trade block.
On the other side of the spectrum are the Thunder (22.5), Magic (23.5), Pistons (25.5), Cavaliers (26.5) and Rockets (26.5) – teams whose 2021 first-round picks will be battling for the Rookie of the Year award this season.
Win Total Best Bets
Denver Nuggets OVER 47.5 Wins (-115). After disrespecting reigning NBA MVP Nikola Jokic by listing him ninth in this year’s list of favorites for the award, oddsmakers are showing no love to the Nugs. While the club will be without Jamal Murray for the majority of the year, the big Serbian led Denver to a 16-8 record minus the Canadian point guard last season. That .667 win percentage works out to 54.7 victories over 82 games.
Portland Trailblazers UNDER 47.5 Wins (-115). Jason Kidd’s career coaching winning percentage is barely over .500, and without any notable free-agent additions, it’s hard to see Damian Lillard’s mood improving anytime soon. Things could get ugly in the Pacific Northwest after a slow start.
New Orleans Pelicans UNDER 39.5 Wins (-115). The Pels played at a 35-win pace in 2020-21. While they wisely dumped Stan Van Gundy, their roster doesn’t look much better after waving goodbye to Lonzo Ball and adding three-point specialist Devonte’ Graham and center Jonas Valanciunas. Expect Zion Williamson to leave the Big Easy at his first opportunity.
